Hecla Island, Manitoba (July 7, 2005) -– Steven Hakes and Rick Weihe began the match play portion of the 2005 Canadian Senior Match Play Championship a day early. The co-leaders at 1-over-par 145 after two rounds of stroke play essentially went head-to-head for low-medalist honours, with Hakes edging Weihe by a single shot.
Hakes, of San Diego, CA fired a 1-under 71 for a three-day total of even-par 216, one shot better than Weihe of Bellingham, WA. First-round leader Jack Ramsey of Germantown, TN finished third at 218 after a 3-under 69. Chris Maletis of Portland, OR fired the low round of the day at 4-under 68 and finished tied for fifth and earned the fifth seed.
“My goal today was to win medalist honours,” said Hakes, who made the Round of 16 at last year’s U.S. Senior Amateur. “I hit the ball better the first two days, but I managed get it done today.”
Hakes began the round with a birdie on the par-5 fourth and extended his lead on the par-4 sixth with another birdie, while Weihe made bogey. By the 15th Hakes was up three shots, but bogeys on 17 and 18 made it interesting.
Pierre Archambault of Canidac, QC, who played in the final group, struggled to a 4-over 76, but his total of 222 was enough to make him the low Canadian and earn the eighth seed. Real Gamache of Quesnel, BC and Ron Green of Mississauga, ON finished one shot back. In all, 15 Canadians qualified for the match play portion of the tournament.
The final four spots of the match play bracket were decided by a five-for-four playoff, which included three Canadian senior amateur golfers. Unfortunately, Tom Wilson of Winnipeg, MB was eliminated, leaving Phil Kerbat and Stuart Nicholson of Calgary, AB to advance to match play.
For Hakes, who teed it up earlier this year at the PGA Tour’s Buick Invitational, match play is a different animal all together compared with stroke play. “The way to keep the pressure on your opponent in match play is to make pars and not make bogeys.”
Of the 32 golfers who qualified for match play, 13 also qualified in 2004 in Cranbrook, BC, including three of the four seimifinalists: Russ Berkoben of Perrysburg, OH, David Carroll of Napa, CA and Weihe.

Conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA), this prestigious national championship features 86 of North America’s top senior male amateur golfers competing in both stroke and match play for the title of Canadian Senior Match Play Champion. Now in its ninth year, the event has quickly become one of the most coveted tournaments among senior golfers in North America.
The winner of the 2005 Canadian Senior Match Play Championship will be granted exemptions into the 2005 Canadian Senior Championship held September 19-22 at Le Club de golf Milby, Lennoxville, Que., and/or the 2005 USGA Senior Men’s Championship, September 17 - 22 in Rocky Face, Ga.
The competition is open to male amateur golfers who have reached the age of 55 by July 6th, 2005 and who are members of a golf club belonging to the RCGA or clubs in other countries, which are in good standing with their respective associations. A golfer must also have a handicap factor of 8.0 or less on the date of filing the application.
Championship play will be conducted Tuesday, July 5th through Thursday, July 7th, with 18 holes of stroke play each day. The field will then be reduced to 32 players after 54 holes for match play. A competitor’s qualifying score will determine his position in the draw. The first two rounds of 18-hole matches will take place Friday, July 8th with the quarterfinal and semi-final matches on Saturday, July 9th and the championship final on Sunday, July 10th.
