LAS CRUCES, NM (June 26, 2005) -– Three out of the past four years, Lee Sanchez, playing out of the Marty Sanchez Links in Santa Fe has finished in third place at the Sun Country Amateur Championship. Well, Sanchez pulled away from that trend in a positive
fashion earning the title Sunday by two strokes over Robert Goff of Picacho Hills CC in the 54-hole SCAGA Amateur Championship held at NMSU Golf Club in Las Cruces.
Sanchez finished 11-under par (205), including a final round 67, which was also the day’s best. Goff, who was tied with Sanchez heading into the final round carded a 3-under par 69 Sunday to finish at 9-under par (207). Sanchez finished today’s front nine 4-under par and took a three stroke lead over Goff into the final nine holes and from there he never looked back.
“This is without question the biggest win I have ever had,” said an ecstatic Sanchez following the trophy presentation Sunday. “This event has the best level of amateur competition around and to be among the winners of this event really means a great deal to me.”
The 46 year old Sanchez, who earned two New Mexico State High School Championships, remembers playing in the SCAGA Amateur with past winner Bart Bryant. In addition, Sanchez quit playing the game for 11-years as he was burned out from playing so much during his younger years. His home club, the Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe is named in honor of his brother who died of cancer.
“I’ve always wanted to win this one,” said Sanchez. Well, after three recent third place finishes, a Sun Country Amateur Championship Trophy will be proudly displayed.
