Nebraska (NGA) Match Play Championship
Nebraska Match Play Champion
GOTHENBURG, NE (June 26, 2005) -- Jon Deines of Beatrice defeated Keth Malone of Lincoln 2-up in the 36-hole final of the Nebraska Match Play Championship Sunday at Gothenburg's 6,900 yard, par-72 Wild Horse Golf Club.
Both players started the morning round quickly. Malone birdied the first hole to go 1-up and Deines followed with birdies at the second and third holes to gain a 1-up advantage. It was a lead Deines wouldn't relinquish until the 20th hole of the day.
Malone evened the match during the afternoon round with a birdie on the 431 yard, par-4 second hole only to see Deines make a birdie on the next hole, the 537 yard, par-5 third hole to regain the lead. Deines stretched his lead to 3-up by winning the 10th hole with a par but Malone fought back to tie the match on the 16th hole.
Deines made birdie on the 17th to gain a 1-up advantage and his conceded birdie on the 18th hole gave him a 2-up victory.
"I'm just worn out right now. Today it took a lot of energy to play especially later in the day when the wind started to blow hard. I'm excited to be done," Deines said.
Despite the result, Malone enjoyed his final pairing with Deines.
"I'm a little disappointed in the result, but Jon played well to beat me. He's just a great player," Malone said.
