PNGA Women's Am: Philippine finale
RICHLAND, Wash. (July 10, 2008) – Two members of the Philippine national golf team will meet in the final match of the 107th PNGA Women’s Amateur Championship, being held at Meadow Springs Country Club in Richland, Wash. Sixteen year-old Cyna Rodriguez will face 25 year-old Anya Tanpinco, the reigning Philippine amateur champion, in tomorrow’s 36-hole final. Both Rodriguez and Tanpinco are playing in the championship on a Presidential Invitation from the PNGA.
In this morning’s quarterfinal match, Tanpinco defeated Philippine teammate Chihiro Ikeda 2-up. In Rodriguez’ morning match, she was 4 up with four holes to play against Breanne Smith of Canby, Ore., but then lost the next two holes. However, after Smith missed her birdie putt on 17, Rodriguez knocked her two-foot par putt in to secure a victory.
Rodriguez played flawlessly in the afternoon’s semifinal match, easily defeating defending champion Kim Shin 4 & 3. Shin had defeated Madeleine Shields of Boise, Idaho in the morning’s quarterfinal match to reach her match against Rodriguez. Tanpinco, who had shot the low score in the qualifying rounds with a 3-under par 69, closed out her afternoon semifinal match 3 & 2 against Lauren Archer of Boise.
The PNGA Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur are being held concurrently at Meadow Springs Country Club.
