Maine Amateur: Ryan Gay wins title
SACO, ME (July 10, 2008)--He's not the youngest player ever to win the Maine Amateur Championship, but at 17 years old, Ryan Gay of Augusta is definitely the youngest player in recent memory to win.
After finishing well enough through two rounds to gain a spot in the final group with fellow Augusta Country Club member Mark Plummer, a 13 time Am championship winner, and Ricky Jones who's won the Amateur twice along with the Maine Open, Gay made a four-birdie charge on the front nine at Biddeford-Saco Country Club Thursday to win his first Maine Amateur Championship.
He finished the day at three under par 68 for a three-day total of 208, 5-under-par.
Plummer finished at 72 Thursday for a total of three under 210.
"If I couldn't have won it myself, it was absolutely great to have Ryan win it," says Plummer, who plays regularly with Gay at Augusta Country Club. In fact, they played their club championship against each other last year, which Plummer won despite the fact that Gay was several under par.
Gay is also the defending Maine Junior Champion and becomes the first player since Jim Veno in the 1960s to win both titles in the same year.
A special visitor came to watch his good friend, Mark Plummer, compete in today's final round. Former President George H.W. Bush rode around for most of the back nine with the final group.
