HOUSTON, Texas (June 29, 2008)--Guy Goodspeed of Del Rio and James Dalthorp of Houston knew it was going to be a long and hard battle to claim the 2008 TGA State Public Links title, but neither of them knew how long.

In a close match that ended all square after 18 holes, Goodspeed finally came out on top with a birdie on the 23rd hole. It was the classic case of “no one should have to lose” as both players played some outstanding golf and were well under par.

Dalthorp seemed to have the advantage after birdies on #12 and #13 put him two up. But, as is often the case in match play, things can change quickly.

Dalthorp three putted #16 to lose that hole, then Goodspeed birdied #17 to square the match. Both players had birdie putts inside of 15 feet on the 18th hole but neither could get their putt to fall, extending the match to extra holes.

After matching pars for four holes, Goodspeed hit his approach on the par four 5th hole to within five feet and made the putt for the win. Earlier in the tournament it took Goodspeed 20 holes to get past Tyler Gann and into the Round of 16, then 19 holes to top Dustin Thompson in the quarterfinals.

Goodspeed is a member of the Texas State University at San Marcos golf team.
