Washington State Women's Am Final Results
SEQUIM Wash. (June 26, 2008)--Stephanie Corey of Seattle, Wash. and Ann Swanson of Redmond, Wash. are champions at the beautiful Sunland Golf and Country Club. Corey shot a brilliant 1-under par 72 to take the 15th annual WSGA Women’s Amateur title by six strokes over 36-hole leader Leslie Folsom. Swanson fended off charging Ginny Burke to capture the 9th annual WSGA Senior Women’s Amateur by one stroke.

Corey took advantage of the ideal conditions, shooting the low-round of the championship, the only round under par the whole week. Her spectacular day was highlighted by birdies on the 3rd, 12th, and 15th holes, with the only blemishes on her scorecard being two bogeys on 11 and 14. Thirty-six-hole leader Leslie Folsom fell back into a tie for the lead with Corey after she double-bogeyed the 4th hole, and Corey took it outright after Folsom bogeyed the 6th. Corey then pulled away, shooting a 36 on the back-nine to Folsom’s 41, finishing six strokes ahead at 10-over par 229.

In the Senior Division, Swanson and Anne Carr of Renton, Wash. were tied for the lead going into the final round, but it was Fircrest, Wash. native Ginny Burkey who mounted a final day charge. Burkey, who started the day three behind the leaders, shot an impressive 75, highlighted by birdies at the 5th, 15th, and 18th hole. Swanson, who carded a 77 of her own, secured her victory with a par putt on the final hole, closing with a 54-hole total of 233, one stroke ahead of Burkey. Carr finished with an 81, and a total score of 237.

This was Swanson’s third Senior Amateur title.

This was the 15th WSGA Women’s Amateur competition and 9th Senior Women’s Amateur competition. The Women’s Amateur is one of 6 state championships conducted annually by the WSGA. Other championships include the WSGA Men’s Best-Ball, WSGA Women’s Best-Ball, WSGA Men’s Amateur, WSGA Member Club Team Championship and WSGA Senior Men’s Amateur.

**Much thanks were given to all of the staff at Sunland Golf and Country Club, especially to General Manager and Head Professional Tyler Sweet, long-time Superintendent Dan Ratcliffe, and WSGA representatives from Sunland, Cheryl Coulter and Carol Goodman. The result awards were presented by WSGA President and championship participant Sharon Johnston.
