Florida Women's Match Play: Mendez wins another
Wins second title in 19 holes
Gennifer Mendez, North Port defeated Mindy Smith of Tampa, in 19 holes to capture her second FWSGA State Amateur Match Play Championship at Southern Hills Plantation in Brooksville May 5-9, 2008. Gennifer’s first title was captured at Southern Dunes Golf and Country Club in 2005.
Mendez, 20, the 12th seed, defeated 3rd seed Mindy Smith, in 19 holes in the final match to secure the title. In route to the finals, Mendez defeated Therese Quinn in the first round 4 & 3. In the second round, Mendez defeated Debe Schwedler 3 & 2. Mendez advanced to the quarterfinals and upset 4th seed Natalie McNicholas 3 & 2. In the semifinals, Mendez defeated Wendi Golden 2 & 1 to advance to the final match.
In the first flight, Carolina Hart of West Palm Beach, defeated Kathi Lundstrom, of Sewalls Point 5 & 4. The second flight featured Kate Antle of Vero Beach, defeating Marsha Funk of Palm Beach Gardens, 3 & 2. The third flight had Judy Davis of Weeki Wachee, defeating Kay Lippy of Dade City 2 & 1.
The Championship consisted of 71 players playing an 18-hole seeding round Monday, May 5 and advancing to match play Tuesday, May 6th. After the qualifying round, players were divided into 4 flights. The championship flight consisted of 32 players with the additional 3 flights with 16 players in each.
