Alameda Commuters: Five tied for lead after Rd. 2
Reigning SF City Champ tied for lead
Reigning SF City Champ tied for lead

ALAMEDA, Calif. (April 20, 2008)--The second weekend of play at the historic Alameda Commuters won't lack for excitement (we'll be there providing video coverage) as five golfers are currently tied for the lead after 36 holes of play.

But that may not even be the most exciting story.

Emily Childs, 17, fresh off a victory at the San Francisco City Championship, made the cut after firing consecutive 74's to sit at 148, ten strokes off the lead. It was the first time a woman has made the cut in the 80-year history of the tournament, and according to Tournament Commitee member Mike Maurice, it is the first time in Northern California history that a woman has made the cut in a tournament of this size.

The University of Colorado at Boulder-bound Childs sunk a 20-foot birdie putt on the 35th hole of the SF City championship match, which gave led to a 1-up victory over Dorothy Schwartz.

"This year I've been playing really well, everything that I've set out to do I've done," said Childs, who noted that her short game was especially strong over the weekend. "I wanted to win the San Francisco City and make the cut at the Alameda, so that was a big confidence booster.

"I've played in this tournament for the past two years, and I usually play golf with guys, so I wasn't that intimidated"

The reigning SF City men's champion, Martin Trainer, is also making waves at the Commuters after firing a second-round 67, combined with a 71 to join the logjam atop the leaderboard at 4-under 138.

Chris Marin, the winner of the amateurgolf.com California Mid-Amateur, joins Trainer, along with Walnut Creek's Sean DeMeter, Andrew Haggen of De La Salle HS and Cal-Berkley golfer Michael Jensen. Freddy Wolfe is a stroke off the pace at 139, while 11 other golfers are within four strokes.

Other notables include Rick Reinsberg, the champion in four of the past five years is at 145. Darryl Donovan and Ken Webb, both two-time Commuters champs, sit at 147 and 148, respectively.

Patrick Burda, son of former champ Jeff Burda is at 143, while Commuters Committee member Mark Merrigan finished at 147.

ABOUT THE Alameda Commuters

What's in a name? In the case of the Alameda Commuters Championship, the logo of the almost 100 year old tournament would be a dead giveaway. It's a steam ferry, which was the only way to "commute" to San Francisco from the East Bay before the Bay Bridge was built. Started as an informal event -- the original first prize was a bag of nails -- the tournament has grown into one of the top independent events in California.

A dedicated tournament committee prides itself on running the two weekend, 72-hole competition as if it were a PGA Tour event. Two of the best public courses at the city-owned Chuck Corica Golf Complex are prepared with care. Slick greens, Sunday pins, and even that rarity in amateur golf – spectators are all part of the fun. The roped-off scoreboard is a particular area of pride for the "green jackets" who were wearing dark green blazers before they were made popular by another tournament you might be aware of in Augusta Georgia. The 250 player championship division is cut to 50 and ties for the second weekend, at which time the 36-hole senior division tees off to join them.
