PERU, Indiana (August 28, 2006) -- “It’s never happened before. I’ve never written ’28 holes’ on the scoreboard,” claims JJ Spreitzer, Tournament Director. Even the computer scoring program only recognized ’24 holes.’ But there is always a first time – and the 2006 IGA Four Ball, held at Rock Hollow GC in Peru, was it.
Mike Whallon and Todd Irwin claimed a first round Four Ball match victory after 28 holes of play, which included rain delays, a fog delay and a stop due to darkness, and took 24 hours to complete.
The Whallon/Irwin team defeated Joe Hillman and Bob Stephens on the 28th hole of the round of 32 for the Four Ball Championship.
Hillman and Stephens won the 16th hole of regulation play to go one-up over Whallon and Irwin. Then gave back the win on the #17th to return to all square. From there out, the two teams traded pars and birdies to continue on.
When one teammate faltered, the other stepped in to match the halve. What transpired is the classic match play competition, a thrill to observe and an emotional ride for the participants, requiring a steady hand and an even steadier nerve.

The Whallon/Irwin team then proceded directly to the first tee to play the second round match against Derek Moore and Brian Straley. Moore and Straley were able to squeak out the win against the marathon team, finishing the match at 2- up.
In the final match, the Runnels/Nichols team took WAY less than 24 hours to defeat the Vlasic/Smith team, 5 & 4.
