BIRMINGHAM, AL (July 22, 2006) -- Clemson freshman Kyle Stanley of Gig Harbor, WA, fought off the weather and a crowded leaderboard to take a one-stroke victory in the 100th Southern Amateur championship at C.C. of Birmingham's West Course.

Stanley saw his 3-shot lead over Drew Weaver of High Point, NC, shrink to just one stroke after final round play Saturday resumed following a 3-hour rain delay. He made bogeys at the 16th and 17th holes to bring Weaver into title contention, but closed the door with a solid par at the closing hole, drilling his approach to within 12 feet.

"This feels great -- to win such a good tournament with such a good field," said the slender 18-year-old, whose closing 71 gave him a 9-under-par 275 total. "I tried not to think about the winner here getting a spot in Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill tournament, but not with much success. Playing in a big PGA Tour event like that is a dream for any amateur."

Weaver, who played his way into the elite field as a qualifier, said he was "disappointed, but I couldn't have played better than the last two rounds." His 65-68 work in the final two rounds left him at 276.

Defending champ Webb Simpson closed with three rounds under par, but couldn't overcome his opening 75 to repeat. The 101st Southern Am will be played at CC of North Carolina at Pinehurst next July.
