PLAYERS AM: Moore, at 22-under, Wins Prestigious Event

BLUFFTON, SC (July 16, 2006) -- Twenty-one year old Jonathan Moore is the 2006 Players Amateur Champion. The tournament held on Belfair’s East course concluded on Sunday afternoon with the Oklahoma State star shooting 22 under. His four-day total was 67-62-66-67 = 262. His second day 62 tied the course record set earlier in the day by Brent Witcher.

Moore is enjoying a winning streak in 2006. The Vancouver, Washington native won his final three events of the collegiate season – the NCAA Championships, the Central Regional and The Maxwell. He was also awarded the Phil Mickelson Award. It is given each year to the nation’s outstanding Division 1 freshman golfer.

His win at the Players Amateur also earns him an exemption in the 2007 Verizon Heritage. The PGA TOUR event is taking place April 9-15 over the Harbour Town Golf Links. Pinehurst, NC native Robert Riesen shot 21 under to come in second place. The rising sophomore at UNC – Chapel Hill four-day total was 64-68-66-65 = 263. Kyle Stanley, from Gig Harbor, Washington also tied the newly set course record during his final round to place third. His four-day total was 69-65-68-62 = 264. South Carolina native Todd White and Trip Kuehne, from Irving Texas, tied for first place in the mid-amateur division by scoring 16 under. For complete results, click on the tournament link above.

ABOUT THE Players Amateur

While competing in the 1999 US Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach, former US Walker Cup Team members, Duke Delcher and Tom McKnight discussed the formation of a premier 72-hole stroke play amateur golf tournament. The inaugural Players Amateur was held the next summer. Former British Open Champion, Ben Curtis, was the winner of the 2000 event.  In 2004, the Heritage Classic Foundation began running the event. The Heritage Classic Foundation was formed in 1987 as a 501 (c) (3), not- for-profit organization, it serves as the operational and financial oversight group for the PGA Tour RBC Heritage Classic. The Foundation distributes all charitable funds generated from the tournaments to charity. The winner of The Players Amateur gets an exemption into the PGA Tour RBC Heritage Classic, as well as the Master of the Amateurs tournament in Melbourne, Australia.
