Texas North Senior: Grace Takes Two-Shot Lead Into Final Round
CARROLLTON, Texas (April 26, 2011) -- Cool temperatures and soft conditions allowed for aggressive play in today’s opening round of the North Senior Amateur Championship which is being held at the Honors Golf Club of Dallas in Carrollton, TX. While the speed of the greens spoiled some player’s rounds with three putts, the receptiveness of the soft conditions urged players to go flag seeking. Thankfully the rain held off and allowed for a stack of players to find themselves in contention heading into tomorrow’s final round.

John Grace got off to a hot start by making birdie on the third and fourth holes and never looked back. Grace, of Fort Worth, made bogey at the difficult seventh hole, but offset that with birdies on both of the par 5’s on the back nine for a round of 69. John Grace, the 2010 Senior Amateur Champion, will take a two shot lead into Wednesday’s final round.

Chip Stewart made bogey on two of his last three holes, but still fired a round of 71 thanks to three birdies. Mark Witt made five birdies, but four bogeys dropped his round to one under par 71. Stewart of Dallas, and Witt of Colleyville will try to chase down Grace in the final round. In the senior division, seven players fired rounds of par or better.

In the Super Senior Division, Jim Hays will take a three shot lead into the final round. Hays of prosper made three birdies and two bogeys, but the highlight of his round came at the par four 13th hole where he made an eagle. Hays, the winner of the senior division of this championship in 2009, will try to defend his three shot lead after an opening round of 69. Lynn Lowrance was the only other super senior at par or better after an opening round 72. Lowrance of McKinney had an up and down day, making four birdies and four bogeys.
