Georgia Tech takes lead at Altantic Coast Conference Championship
NEW LONDON, NC (April 22, 2011) -- Georgia Tech has captured the first round lead of the ACC Men’s Golf Championship, being played April 22-24 at the Old North State Club (Par 72, 7,102 yards) in New London, N.C.
Georgia Tech (281, -7) is leading by eight strokes over Duke (289, +1). The weather was cool and rainy and challenged the players for most of the day. “Obviously, it was very difficult at the start. The weather was a challenge. Sometimes the first round is the hardest round because everyone is so anxious to play and is ready to go, and I’m really proud of the way they hung in there, “ said Georgia Tech head coach Bruce Heppler.
Clemson is in third (290, +2), Wake Forest fourth (293, +5), Florida State fifth (294, +6), tied for sixth place is Virginia and NC State (295, +7). North Carolina is in eighth place (297, +9), Virginia Tech at 299 is in ninth place. Maryland is in 10th place (304) and Boston College 11th place at 314.
Individually, Georgia Tech’s Paul Haley (r-Sr., Dallas, Tex.) and Kyle Scott (Sr., Johannesburg, South Africa) are tied for first with 4-under par 68. One shot back tied for third is Wake Forest’s John Varol (Fr., Waxhaw, N.C.) and Duke’s Yaroslav Merkulov (Fr., Penfield, N.Y.) with a 3-under par 69.
Bruce Woodall, Virginia junior from Eden, N.C. shot a hole-in-one on the par 3, 191 yard 14th hole and finished out the round with a 3-over par 75.
Second round action begins tomorrow at 8:00am with Maryland and Boston College in the first wave. NC State, North Carolina and Virginia Tech are in the second wave which starts at 8:40am. The third wave consists of Wake Forest, Florida State and Virginia at 9:40am. The fourth wave consists of Georgia Tech, Duke and Clemson at 10:40am.
