West and Morris win Maryland Senior Four Ball
PIKESVILLE, Maryland (May 13, 2010) -- Marty West and Bobby Morris, two of the most accomplished golfers in the state, combined their talents to shoot 7-under-par 32-34--66 and win the 15th annual Senior Two-Man Team championship of the Maryland State Golf Association at Woodholme Country Club in Pikesville, May 13. The course was played at 6,395 yards to a par of 35-38--73 for 65 teams.

Morris, from Congressional Country Club, birdied the 17th and 18th holes to help his team pull away from early Crofton Country Club leaders Ken Fontanesi and Rocky Anastasi, who had posted 34-34--68. Tied for the lead after their 16th hole, West urged his partner to "do something," while going to the 17th tee, Morris promptly struck a 4-iron shot to 12 feet at the 203-yard par-3 and followed with a curling side-hill 6-footer at the end of the closing 475-yard par 5 after hitting the flagstick from the front bunker.

Of the early going, West, from Columbia Country Club, said, "We knew there was a 68, so to better that we had to figure out a way to do it." Some of the ways they found included Morris getting them started with a breaking 15-foot birdie putt at the sixth; West making birdie at the seventh, Morris at the eighth, and West producing a par-saving downhill nine-foot putt at the ninth, then keeping the momentum going with a two-footer for birdie at the 10th. Morris created the tie at 5 under with a birdie at the 12th to set the stage for the climactic finish.

Although each member of the winning side has an impressive resume of state and regional titles to go with natonal and international competition (West has been a member of two Walker Cup teams and Morris won an Alaskan Open), this marked the first showing for both in this MSGA event.

Fontanesi and Anastasi, perennial challengers in this program, had their best finish, as they meshed for seven birdies. Bogeys at Nos. 3 and 10 were the result of a three-putt and a missed green, respectively. Along the way, Fontanesi hit it to 18 inches to set up one birdie and Anastasi rolled in putts from 20 feet and 50 feet to keep their drive going.

Robert Rehman, from the University of Maryland Golf Club and Ira Pearlman, Beaver Creek Country Club, had the low net of 65. They had 33-38 gross and 29-36 net. Pearlman led the way with three birdies on the front nine. Steve Trevisan, Congressional Country Club and Lee Langan, Bethesda Country Club, placed second with 66.

An overnight rain was followed by a day-long overcast and cool temperatures that barely made it out of the 50's. Regardless, the course was in its usual pristine condition, drawing rave notices from the players about the work done by veteran superintendent Steve Potter and his staff. Several were willling to down-play high scores, blaming it on a loss of concentration as they enjoyed the scenic rolling layout. This was particularly true of first-time visitors who had little or no idea this gem existed.

The 2011 Senior Two-Man will be contested on Monday, June 13 at Montgomery Village Golf Club.
