NIAGARA FALLS, New York (July 25, 2009) --Brendan Gielow chipped in for birdie on the third hole of a three-way playoff Saturday to win the Porter Cup.

Gielow, who started the final round three shots back of the lead, closed with a 3-under 67 at Niagara Falls Country Club to tie Andrew Yun (68) and Cody Gribble (70) at 6-under 204.

After Gribble, a freshman-to-be at Texas, was eliminated with bogey on the first extra hole, Gielow used a pitching wedge from off the 18th green on the third playoff hole to chip his ball into the hole and defeat Yun, a rising Stanford freshman.

Gielow, of Muskegon, Mich., tied for ninth at the Sunnehanna Amateur in mid-June and tied for 12th Monroe Invitational a week later. He tied for ninth at the Northeast Amateur, an event he won last year, and was 10th at the Southern Amateur.

Gielow, 21, will be a senior at Wake Forest in the fall. He is No. 31 in the Golfweek/amateurgolf.com World Amateur Rankings.

The tournament was shortened to 54 holes after rain canceled Thursday’s play.

Mike Van Sickle, who was tied for the overnight lead, closed with 77 and tied for 23rd. It was the latest in a string of disappointing finishes this summer for the first-team All-American from Marquette, who is trying to make the Walker Cup team. He finished T-51 at the Sunnehanna Amateur and T-61 at the Northeast Amateur, and missed the cut in the PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic and U.S. Bank Championship.

University of San Diego head coach Tim Mickelson, the brother of PGA Tour player Phil Mickelson, was tied with Van Sickle for the second-round lead, but finished T-8 after a 74.
