BOULDER CITY, Nev. (Nov. 17, 2008) -- When Josh Vornsand woke up Sunday and drove to Boulder Creek Golf Club, winning the Clark County Amateur wasn't foremost on his mind.

Especially because he was five shots behind a pretty good golfer in Matt Edwards.

"I was just looking to have a good round," Vornsand said.

He got what he wanted and more, a 5-under-par 67 that was good enough to force a playoff in the Scratch Division with Edwards, his friend and former high school teammate.

After the pair tied with two-day totals of 140, Vornsand made a birdie on the first playoff hole to win the final Southern Nevada Golf Association event of the year. Joe Sawaia finished third at 144.

"It was a great round," Vornsand said. "My long game was going well. I hit some solid 4-irons that kept the momentum going."

It was Vornsand's second SNGA win of 2008. It was also his final amateur event as he intends to turn pro in a couple of months and take his chances on the Gateway Tour.

Edwards is turning pro as well. He played with Vornsand at Silverado High School and later at Coronado, then moved on to college golf at UNLV and New Mexico State.

"I think I played a little safer and I made a couple of mistakes," said Edwards, who was unable to duplicate his 4-under 68 from Saturday and shot par 72 Sunday. "But Josh played great."

Edwards fell behind quickly in the playoff when he put his tee shot in a fairway bunker on the left side of the par-4, 415-yard first hole. Vornsand's drive landed in the first cut of rough down the right side. Edwards hit out of the bunker, landing short of the green, while Vornsand's wedge landed within six feet of the cup.

Edwards was 60 feet away and he knew he would have to hole out from the fringe to have any chance to stay in the match. He ran his putt seven feet past, and Vornsand made his birdie to end the match.

In the Net Division, Henderson's Mark Easton won his first SNGA event, posting scores of 68 and 69 for a 137. He won by four shots over Paudie O'Connor and seven over Tom Seidl.

"My putter was hot," Easton said. "I had 31 putts Saturday and 29 (Sunday). I like these greens."

Michael Gehrke of Las Vegas recorded a hole-in-one on the 185-yard No. 8, using a 4-iron. It was his first ace, and he finished in a tie for 29th in the Scratch Division at 160.

SNGA president Brady Exber followed his opening-round 6-under 66 with a par 72 to win the scratch division of the two-day Clark County Senior Amateur at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City by seven strokes over Steven Hakes (72-73--145).

John Garrett (73-68--141) took the net division by one stroke over Harold Critcher (73-69). Johns second round net 68 was the low round of the net tournament.

Tom Hyland had a hole in one on the 8th hole on Thursdays round. This is Toms tenth hole in one in his career.
