Lamar, Richmond atop Wolfpack Intercollegiate scoreboard
RALEIGH, N.C. – The wind was the winner on day one of the Wolfpack Spring Open as Lonnie Poole Golf Course was the victim of a pending storm that sent scores racing on Saturday.
The day’s average score was 77.34, well over six shots above par on NC State’s Arnold Palmer designed course, Lamar and Richmond took advantage of early tee times to lead the field by a comfortable margin going into Sunday’s final round.
Lamar finished up at 6-over 290, one shot ahead of Richmond. Francis Marion is in third at 18-over 302.
NC State went off about an hour later than the leaders and that was a huge difference in scoring as winds were whipping above 30 miles per hour as the club was finishing up in the mid-afternoon.
The Wolfpack is tied for seventh after shooting 22-over 306.
Richmond’s Sam Beach shot low round of the day with a 2-under 69. Lamar’s duo of MJ Daffue and Xavier Feyaerts came in a shot back as the only other two competitors under par on the day.
Sophomore Mitchell Sutton fired a two-over 73 and is tied for fifth to pace the Pack.
Freshman Albin Choi is tied for 13th after a 4-over 75, but did his best work in those wild condition by recording birdie on Nos. 7 and 8 and made par on his final hole, the ninth, which was the hardest hole of the day.
In fact, the par-5 seventh was the only hole to play under par on Saturday.
Junior Mark McMillen is tied for 40th after a 7-over 78 and senior Brandon Detweiler shot a 9-over 80.
Playing as individuals, junior Graham Baillargeon shot a 6-over 77 and is tied for 27th, while Hunter Howell had an 88 and is in 67th.
The second and final round gets underway Sunday morning at 8 a.m. Golfstat will have live scoring of the final 18 holes.
