Saladino wins 60th Havemeyer Invitational
BAY SHORE, New York (May 22, 2010) -- The Havemeyer Invitational turned 60 this year as one of the top amateur events in the Metropolitan New York Area.
The tournament is named in honard of Horace Havemeyer, a member of Southward Ho who purchased the club's defaulted mortgage from the bank during the Great Depression in order to save it from being purchased by a speculator who may not have cared about the history of the club, or the wonderful A.W. Tillinghast designed golf course. Havemeyer allowed the club to purchase the loan from him at his cost some years later. (If you are interested in learning more, click here for a club history.)
Now the club thrives, and the tournament has reached its 60th anniversary by inviting another solid field that included some of the top players in the Met Section.
Joseph Saladino, 29, a former St. John's University golfer who founded Manhattan's first golf gym several years ago, won a close final match over Sean Hartman, 2 & 1. Saladino has plenty of match play experience - he made match play at last year's USGA Mid-Am, and was runner-up at the 2008 Metropolitan Amateur.
The Senior Division also ended in a tight final match, with Steve Rose defeating Joe Sommers, 2 & 1. For complete brackets, click on the link below.
