JUPITER, Fla. (August 2, 2009) – Danny Germaine of Palm Beach Gardens was the only
player to break 70 Sunday as he came from four strokes behind to win
the 34th annual Palm Beach Kennel Club/County Amateur Championship at
The Bear’s Club.
A final round of three under par 69, his lowest score of the weekend,
pushed Germaine’s 54-hole total to 210 two strokes better than Stephen
Anderson of Hobe Sound. Anderson led for 50 holes before making a
double bogey at the par-4 15th and bogey at the par-3 16th, finishing
with 75-212.
Mike Weeks of Jupiter and Gabe Costa of Tequesta, both playing in the
threesome in front of Germaine and Anderson, were third and fourth but
neither really challenged for the title. Weeks, membership director at
Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach, had 74-215, Costa, a rising
junior at Stetson University, 75-216.
“Winning this tournament has always been at the top of my list,” said
Germaine, 30, a 1998 graduate of Suncoast High School. “I played well
today…I didn’t back into it. It’s awesome, very exciting.” Overall, he
had five birdies and two bogeys on the first 12 holes and parred the
last six.
It was Germaine’s seventh Palm Beach County Golf Ass
ociation in the
last two and a half seasons, his third this year following the Palm
Beach International in April and the Public Links in June. He also won
three times in 2007 enroute to PBCGA Player of the Year honors.
Anderson, a real estate salesman for Golden Bear Companies who has
played TBC “40-50 times,” he said, led by two strokes after the first
round at the Loxahatchee Club and by three heading into the final
round. He had two birdies and as many bogeys on the first 10 holes. But
at the 15th, he hit his second shot well left of the green, was wide
left on his wedge to the green and three-putted.
“I was just playing for bogey after my second shot,” he said, “but give
Danny credit. He made a lot of good shots and good putts on a good golf
course.”
The victory gives Germaine a lifetime exemption into the County
Amateur and the top 10 and ties, or scores through 223, will be exempt
from qualifying next year.
After one round each at TBC and Loxahatchee, the field of 165 starters
was cut to the low 60 and ties, which fell at 16 over par 160.
Next on the PBCGA schedule: Aug. 15-16, Mid-Amateur Stroke Play, The
Dye Preserve; Aug. 22-23, Parent-Child, Hobe Sound GC; and Aug. 29-30,
