OREGON CITY, ORE. - Jim Dunlap of Tigard, Ore. was able to narrowly edge out Andrew Vijarro of Bend, Ore. by 1-stroke with a 3-under par 69-92-141 to win the title of Champion of Champions at the 65th OGA Tournament of Champions held at Stone Creek Golf Course in Oregon City, Ore. Vijarro was the only player with two sub par rounds. In the Women's Division, Linda Jeffery of Corvallis, Ore. with a 10-over par 78-76--154 and had the upper hand a playoff win over Loree McKay of Portland, Ore. Until today, Dunlap's measure of success was accumulating points and earning invitations to represent Oregon in some of the more prestigious amateur competitions in the region including the Hudson Cup and PNGA Cup. He was also invited to play in the Pacific Coast Amateur last year. His consistent play earned him the honor of being named the Oregon Golf Association's 2008 Golfer of the Year not winning any major championship. "My wife told me my focus on winning points was misguided," said Dunlap. "Now all I want to do is win, and with titles will come points." Jeffery, who played collegiate golf at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, TX, is not well known here, qualified for the tournament as the 2007 club champion at Corvallis CC. Since she has not played in major amateur competitions in the region, she came into the competition as a relative long-shot and was an unlikely winner considering competitors with pedigrees including Oregon Junior and Amateur champions as well as those with success at the state, regional and national level.

In addition to defeating McKay, the 2008 Senior Women's Points Leader, in a playoff, also falling short this time was reigning Oregon Women's Mid-Amateur champion Lara Tennant of Portland, Ore., 2007 Oregon Women's Amateur champion Kristen Svicarovich of Hillsboro, Ore., reigning Oregon Junior Amateur champion Seshia-Lei Telles of Tualatin, Ore. and Kate Hildahl, also of Tualatin. Hildahl, in addition to being the reigning Oregon Women's Amateur champion, plays on the University of Oregon Women's Golf Team for whom she will play at the upcoming NCAA regionals.

The Tournament of Champions is a 36-hole gross stroke play competition and is one of the oldest contests amongst the regular clubs that are members of the Oregon Golf Association. Entrants must be the 2007 or 2008 Men's or Women's gross club champion and must be members in good standing of the club they represent. Also eligible are 2007 & 2008 Individual Gross titleholder of any Championship on the current OGA Men's, Sr. Men's, or Women's performance points lists as well as all past Women's Oregon Amateur Champions, 2008 Hudson Cup Team members and the Junior Stroke Play and Match Play Champions. All champions must be amateurs and be 13 years of age or older.
