TARZANA, Calif, (Dec. 2, 2008) — After years of competing in Southern California Golf Association events, Dan Pouliot of Burbank and Jerry Price of Glendale finally broke through today, winning the fifth SCGA Senior Four-Ball Championship by two shots at El Caballero Country Club.

The 55-year-old Pouliot and the 60-year-old Price, both members of nearby Lakeside Golf Club, led after shooting 68 in the first round. Today under foggy conditions, they combined for a 2-under-par 69. Their 137 total, 5-under-par, was two shots in front of Frank Flanagan of San Diego and former three-time SCGA Senior Amateur champion John Olive of Phoenix, AZ, who combined to shoot 69-70 — 139.

El Cab member Ron Cherney of Encino and Don Baker of Woodland Hills rallied with a 5-under-par 30 on the back nine to shoot 72-68 — 140, and finished in third place, one shot in front of Scott Parker of Placentia and Bob Howe of La Quinta, who shot 71-70 — 141.

Pouliot has played in SCGA events since he was 18 years old but this marks his first association victory. For Price, who manufactures skin care products, it was also a first. They’ve played together in club events but never in an SCGA tournament.

Today’s outcome was in doubt until the final hole when Price drained a 15-foot par putt on the 423-yard 18th hole.

“If Jerry hadn’t made that putt,” said Pouliot later, “The birdie putt that John [Olive} had could have tied us.”

Olive ended up settling for par.

“It was exciting and we played very well together,” said Price later. “When one of us was out of the hole, the other one would pick us up by making par.”

Overall, the pair had three birdies and just one bogey today in the better-ball format. Yesterday, they had four birdies against a lone bogey.

Flanagan and Olive played even more solid golf throughout the event.

“We didn’t make a bogey in 36 holes,” said Flangan later, “But we didn’t make enough birdies.”

Both praised the winners.

“They were solid all day,” said Olive, who won consecutive SCGA Senior Amateur titles from 2001-2003 but has battled injuries since. “They made every putt they had to and left a few on the lip, as well.”

Cherny and Baker struggled to a 2-over-par 38 on the front nine before gaining a head of steam.

“We knew we had to play better,” said Cherny later and they did, storming home with a 5-under-par 30 for their 68.

“The cup had a magnet in it on the back nine,” said Cherny. “Plus, one of us would be in for par so the other one had a free run birdie. We “ham ’n hammed’ it, that’s for sure [in a four-ball format, when partners play with one making birdie on one hole the other on another hole, they’re said to have “ham ’n egged it].”

Defending champions Rich Tolly of Laguna Hills and Boyd Martin of Corona del Mar shot 71-72 — 143 and finished in seventh place.
