Southern California (SCGA) Amateur Championship
RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA (July 8, 2005) -- Home cooking certainly appeals to Cameron Tringale, as the 17-year-old Mission Viejo resident fired a second-round, 6-under-par 66 today at Tijeras Creek Golf Club to grab a four-shot lead at the midpoint of the 106th SCGA Amateur Championship.

Tringale, who has won Tijeras Creek’s junior championship three times in the past four years, opened with a 2-under-par 70 in the first round this morning, then backed it up with his 66, the tournament’s low round. His two-round total of 136, 8 under par, is good for a four-shot lead over a trio of golfers who finished at 140: 2000 SCGA Amateur champion Scott McGihon of Bermuda Dunes, who parlayed a back nine of 31 into a 67 this afternoon; Jordan Nasser of Anaheim Hills, who shot 72-68; and San Diego State student Joshua Warthen of Pismo Beach, who shot 69-71.

After the second round, the field of 84 was trimmed to 46 who shot 150 or better for third round, which will be played tomorrow (Saturday). The final round is Sunday. Tee times both days begin at 7:30 a.m. Gallery is welcome at no charge.

Tringale, who will attend Georgia Tech this fall, finished with a flourish this afternoon, making an eagle 3 on the first hole (his 10th of the round) and adding three birdies for a front nine of 31. Although his parents belong to Mission Viejo CC, “I’ve probably played three times as many rounds at Tijeras Creek as I have at Mission Viejo,” said Tringale after his round. “This feels like home to me.”

The leaderboard has a youthful look. McGihon is the only golfer over age 25 to make the top 10, although three other veterans are tied for 11th. Among those tied for fifth place at 141 is reigning CIF-SCGA Southern Regional Boys champion Bret Kanda of La Cañada-Flintridge. Erik Jarvey, another teenager from Palmdale, who had the first-round lead with a 5-under-par 67 this morning, slipped to a 75 this afternoon and finished at 142.

Defending champion Tim Hogarth of Northridge shot consecutive rounds of 72 and is in a group at 144 that includes former four-time SCGA Amateur champion Craig Steinberg of Oak Park. Hogarth is bidding to become just the sixth player to win back-to-back titles, while a victory for Steinberg would make him just the second player ever to win five championships, joining Paul Hunter, who won five titles from 1908 to 1926.
