Middle Atlantic Senior Amateur: West Repeats
SPRINGFIELD, VA (August 22, 2006) -- Defending champion Marty West of Rockville, MD, and Columbia Country Club, overwhelmed the 24-player final day field (cut from a starting field of 89 players on Monday, August 21st) with a front-nine five-under par 30 at the 6,380 yard Springfield Golf & Country Club course, and then added one more birdie on the back nine for a final score of 65 and a 36-hole total of 136. This gave West a 10-stroke margin over fast-closing John Price and Charles Green III, each of whom recorded fine two-under 69s to share second place with 146 totals. J.P. Leigh, playing with West, triple-bogeyed the par four 16th hole to finish with 71-76--147 for fourth place along with Robert Morris, who finished 75-72.

After chipping in for an eagle on the 520-yard par five second hole, West quickly ended the competition with birdies on Holes 5, 8, and 9. He added a birdie four on the 532-yard par five fifteenth hole. West's only score over four on his Tuesday card was a five on the par five 14th hole. The two-time champion's first round on Monday had featured four birdies and four bogeys for the even par 71. Interestingly, Leigh also had four birdies and four bogeys in his Monday round to match West's 71, which put the two leaders three shots ahead of past champion Jamie Gough of Army Navy CC and steady John Miller of River Bend. West, a two-time Walker Cupper, has won nine Maryland Amateurs, two Metropolitan Amateurs, five Middle Atlantic Amateurs, and three Maryland Opens, as well as one Maryland Senior Amateur to go with his two Middle Atlantic Senior titles. Additionally, West has a Crump Cup win in his resume. He will attempt to maintain the momentum when he seeks a US Senior Amateur qualifying spot at Fountain Head Country Club on Monday, August 28th, where West will be joined by several of the same players who pursued him for two days at Springfield. Last year, West lost in the quarter-finals of the US Senior Amateur.

The Middle Atlantic Senior Amateur will move to a three-day test of 54 holes in 2007 at the venerable Baltimore Country Club Five Farms site. Other future sites are Farmington Country Club (2008) and Fountain Head Country Club (2009). Founded in 1902 and now one of the oldest golf associations in the country, the MAGA conducts seven championships as well as the Mason-Dixon Match with the Golf Association of Philadelphia. The organization also oversees four to five USGA qualifiers each year.
