Leon’s sizzling second-round score of six-under 65 vaulted him into the early clubhouse lead during Monday’s morning draw. Wasylowich followed up his opening-round 69 with a four-under 67 to take a share of top honours.

Wasylowich’s stellar play helped Alberta capture their second consecutive Willingdon Cup as he teamed with fellow Lethbridge native Scott Gloge as well as James Love and Ryan Yip of Calgary. The win marked Alberta’s 13th Inter-provincial team title and fifth in the past eight years.

Leon earned the top seeding by virtue of finishing his round earlier than Wasylowich. The top 64 players after 36 holes will now advance to the championship match play component of the championship.

The low round of the day belonged to National Amateur Team player Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask. who followed up his opening round 74 with a seven-under 64 to capture the 4th seeding.

Though the bulk of the match play seedings were determined, eight players finished play on Monday tied in 59th position at six-over. The group will take to the course Tuesday morning to challenge for the six remaining match play seedings.

Playing off will be Stewart Bannatyne and Matthew Johnston of Winnipeg, Dave Bunker of Woodbridge, Ont., Leon Wayne Carter of River Bourgeois, N.S., and Sean Kee of Hartland, N.B. as well as Americans Tarik Can, John Tyler and Jamie Miller. The round of 64 for match play will begin once the final six seedings have been determined.

The prestigious Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship runs from August 11-18 and will crown Canada’s top male amateur golfer. The 2006 edition of the championship also helps celebrate the centennial anniversary of the historic Mississaugua Golf and Country Club. The picturesque layout has set the stage for many of Canadian golf’s finest moments and is long-renowned as one of this country’s most championship-worthy tests of golf.

As part of the RCGA’s Pathway to Champions, the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship will also see a pair of exemptions earned into the 2006 Canadian Open. Both the champion and runner-up will compete against the PGA Tour’s finest September 4-10 when Canada’s national Open championship marks its much-anticipated return to the Hamilton Golf and Country Club.

The Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship will also feature live hole-by-hole scoring. The initiative will continue to increase the communication of scores for spectators, media and interested golf fans abroad, adding to the prestige of this premier amateur golf championship.

The championship consists of both stroke and match play. The stroke-play portion of the event will be played over 36 holes. The field will be reduced to 64 players after 36 holes qualifying for the match play portion of the championship with the 36-hole final match set for Friday, August 18.

The Inter-provincial Team Championship for the Willingdon Cup features four-member teams competing in conjunction with the first two rounds of stroke play. The best three of four scores will count towards the overall team total.
