If you love the great outdoors, especially during the cold months, you know the value of layering. We all do it one way or another, whether much thought goes into it or not.

But there's a big difference between throwing on a heavy cotton shirt and a big wool sweater to be comfortable, and doing the same thing to be comfortable while playing golf. Because let's face it, you're not going to be too happy you dressed for the weather if you wind up laying the sod over a seven iron.

At the Ryder Cup in Wales, the leaky rain suits were all the talk one day, but almost every day was blustery and cold enough to require more than a golf shirt but less than a jacket. Many players wore high tech long sleeve crew necks under their shirts, giving them an athletic look. FootJoy manufactures one of the most popular of these new pieces of performance apparel.

On a recent tour around three Donald Ross gems in Massachusetts and Connecticut, I decided to put FootJoy's "Performance Base Layer" to the test. On a blustery day at Shennecossett Golf Club -- circa 1895, public, and a bargain -- I was glad I broke it out of the packaging.

The first thing I noticed was that the sleeves aren't overly tight, they just look that way compared to the long sleeve shirts I'm used to wearing under golf shirts on cold days. And the material stretches enough to allow for good golf swings but not enough to defeat the purpose and let the cold air in. A bonus - I normally wind up tucking the tail of my shirt in all day, and the Base Layer and shirt tend to stay together close to the body. I started the day with a light windbreaker, but didn't need it by the third hole. A brisk walk and I was on my way to warmth all day.

Like any warm weather item, if the weather turns dramatically warmer you may wind up wanting to take it off, but that's easy enough. If you started the day with a Base Layer (long sleeve), a golf shirt, and a short sleeve Outer Layer, you might wind up taking off the golf shirt midway through the round and sticking with the Outer Layer.

FootJoy has a mobile or web browser-based application that allows you to select the appropriate clothing for the day. It's called the "Weather Expert" and you can access it on your web browser or mobile device by clicking here.

I can't wait to try all of the latest products in the FootJoy outwear collection and will update this report when I do.
