Mary Ann Hayward with Canadian Senior Am trophy
Hayward Claims Title at 2010 Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Championship
Parksville, B.C. (Aug. 27, 2010) – Mary Ann Hayward of Georgetown, Ont., shot a final-round 6-over par 79 Thursday to win the Royale Cup Canadian Senior Women’s Championship held at Morningstar Golf Club in Parksville, B.C.
Hayward, who headed into her final round with an impressive 9-stroke lead, finished the tournament at 3-over (69-74-79-222) to claim her first Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Championship.
“The first couple of rounds gave me that little push that I needed, but I wish I had have played better today,” said Hayward, a member of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame. “It’s still nice to get in a win though, since I haven’t played much this season.”
With the victory, Hayward earns an exemption into the 2010 US Women’s Senior Amateur in October at Fiddlesticks Country Club in Fort Myers, FL.
Alison Murdoch of Victoria, B.C., finished second at 10-over (78-74-77-229), while third place honours went to Louise Boivin of Repentigny, Que., who finished at 11-over (77-77-76-230).
In the Women’s Super Senior division, Murdoch clinched the victory after shooting a final-round 77 to finish at 6-over, four-strokes ahead of runner-up Diane Williams of Calgary. Marilyn O’Connor of Calgary and Madeline Campbell of Newport Beach, CA finished with a shared of third at 15-over.
The Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Championship was open to women who have reached their 50th birthday by the first scheduled day of the championship, August 24, 2010. Corresponding with the championship was the Super Senior competition, open to female amateurs who reached their 60th birthday by the first scheduled day of the championship.
