Kelly Wins Washington Metro Amateur
With remarkably steady play in the second round and despite a never-say-die attitude from opponent Bobby Fox, Brendan Kelly posted a five-birdie bogey-free round in the conclusion to a long Metropolitan Amateur at Manor Country Club. After completing the morning round all square, Kelly birdied 3 and 8 on the front to hold a one up lead over Fox and then birdied 10, 15 and 17 to post a 3&1 win in the 90th Metropolitan Amateur.

Fox was plagued by driving difficulties on the final nine but remained steadfast in his determination to stay in the match. He made a great sand save at #12 and then an up and down with a low biting wedge to three feet on #13. However, his fate was sealed on the next two holes as he drove wildly to the left on #14 and, after a weak drive on #15, hit his second shot out of bounds on the par five hole. After swapping pars on #16, Kelly played a six iron to 5 feet on #17 and, when Fox barely missed with his 35 foot pitch, stroked the ball gently into the hold to cap a remarkable match play round. In the awards ceremonies, Kelly graciously commended Fox for his determination in a tough match. He also thanked his caddie Bart George for his support throughout the day. George was forced into action when Kelly's father had to leave the bag for a commitment in North Carolina. Now Kelly moves on to the US Amateur Qualifier at Westwood on Monday and Tuesday.
