Once again this year, players at the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur are competing for a start in the U.S. Women’s Open. It was a nice perk thrown into the mix by the USGA in 2017. Kelsey Chugg, winner in 2017, and Shannon Johnson, the defending champion, have reaped the opportunity after their wins.

This year’s Women’s Mid-Am will be played Sept. 14-19 at Forest Highlands Golf Club in Flagstaff, Ariz., which hosted the U.S. Girls’ Junior in 2014.

Qualifying is underway at 33 sites across the U.S. and in Mexico.

August 13

Two-time Florida Women’s Senior Amateur champion Lisa Schlesinger has qualified for another U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur. Schlesinger, a former basketball player, was a quarterfinalist in the 2017 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur. She was the medalist at the Suburban Club in Pikesville, Md., with a 6-over 76.

Stani Schiavone won medalist honors at Whitford CC in Exton, Pa., with an 81. Schiavone, a former college player at Ole Miss, is now a middle school math teacher and assistant golf coach for her mother’s team.

Christina Proteau took the top spot at the qualifier at Kitsap G&CC in Bremerton, Wash. She was a quarterfinalist at the 2014 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship and is a two-time winner of the Canadian Women’s Mid-Amateur (2012, 2013). Proteau also won the 2013 BC Women’s Mid-Amateur.

August 12

There were plenty of qualifying spots available at the qualifier at Coto de Caza (Calif.), GC. In all, 10 women advanced, including former University of Kentucky player Ashleigh Albrecht-Hatton. The former professional recently regained her amateur status and is appearing in a different USGA event than usual. Albrecht-Hatton qualified for the 2009 and 2010 U.S. Women’s Opens, and also played the U.S. Women’s Amateur as a collegian. Whitney French, a former Oregon State player, medaled at Coto de Caza.

For the fourth consecutive year, Kayla Eckelkamp will play the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur. Eckelkamp, who played collegiately at Maryville University in St. Louis, medaled with 75 at WingHaven CC in St. Louis.

Aug. 7
Megan Buck has been part of deep U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur runs before, but just not with a club in her hand. She had a bag on her shoulder as she caddied for friend and four-ball partner Shannon Johnson at the 2016 and 2017 Women’s Mid-Amateur. Buck, a 30-year-old apparel sales representative, teed it up herself last year, making match play, and has qualified to do this same this year. With a 71, Buck was the medalist at Blue Hill Country Club in Canton, Mass.

Former University of Illinois golfer Nora Klein led all qualifiers at Onwentsia Club in Lake Forest, Ill., with an even-par 71. Former Old Dominion golfer Ashley Crain had a 72 to also make in, and Brooke Kochevar, who formerly played for Coastal Carolina, also advanced.

Paige McCullough, the 2017 Minnesota Women’s Mid-Amateur champion, beat out two of her most serious in-state competitors at Dellwood (Minn.) Country Club to take the only qualifying spot in the Women’s Mid-Am. McCullough finished three shots ahead of Olivia Herrick and seven shots ahead of Leigh Klasse.

Mallory Hetzel, the women’s golf coach at Old Dominion and a former collegian at the University of Georgia, had a 72 at Mount Vernon Country Club in Alexandria, Va., to tie for medalist honors with Mariah Hopkins. Earlier this summer, Hetzel finished runner-up at the Virginia Women’s Amateur in July.

Earlier this year, Kay Daniel teed it up at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball alongside her daughter, Abby Daniel. At the Women’s Mid-Am, Daniel will tee it up alone after qualifying in from the Westmoor CC site in Brookfield, Wis. In-state player Katie Elliott Johnson, formerly a player and then the assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin, also qualified.

Chalk up another USGA start for Marilyn Hardy, the 57-year-old who is a staple at not only the Women’s Mid-Amateur, but the Women’s Senior Amateur. She also played the U.S. Senior Women’s Open the past two years, and the U.S. Women’s Open in 1992 and 1994. Another interesting fact? Hardy has had 15 holes-in-one – six of those came in competition, including two during Women’s Mid-Amateurs.

Katie Miller, a quarterfinalist at the 2016 U.S. Women’s Amateur has qualified again, taking the sole spot out of South Hills Country Club in Pittsburgh. The Jeannette, Pa., resident was an All-Atlantic Coast Conference player at the University of North Carolina and competed on the LPGA Futures Tour before regaining her amateur status in 2013. She has played in five previous U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateurs.

• • • Patricia Ehrhart was a long way from her hometown of Honolulu when she teed it up at The Grove in College Grove, Tenn., but she beat the next-best player by five shots to take the only qualifying spot. Ehrhart was a quarterfinalist at the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur last fall and also reached semifinals in the 2016 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur.

• • • Former college players fared very well at Pine Island CC in Charlotte, N.C. Courtney Stiles, who formerly played for N.C. State, was the medalist with a round of 72. Michelle Jarman, a reinstated amateur who played for UNC-Wilmington, plus Katie Kirk (East Carolina), Katie Rose Higgins (South Carolina) and Kim Benedict (Michigan) all advanced.

Former College of Charleston player Emily Rapp took the sole qualifying spot at the Country Club of Lexington (S.C.). To earn it, Rapp had to go head-to-head in a playoff with Heidi Rittenhouse after both finished 18 holes with a round of 78.

July 29

Former Stanford player Lila Thomas (nee Barton) was among the qualifiers at Firewheel Golf Park’s Bridges Course in Garland, Texas. Thomas medaled with a round of 70, which was four shots better than the closest player. Thomas played for the Cardinal from 2008-12 and the 29-year-old is now a brand manager at Chegg.

ABOUT THE U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Qualifying

The U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur qualifier is open to all female competitors with an Index of 9.4 or lower who will be at least 25 years of age at the start of the championship. Format is 18-holes of stroke play. Qualifying sites are scattered across the U.S.
