California Women's Amateur: Cowan wins fourth
CARMEL, Calif. (Nov. 10, 2007)-- Experience triumphed over youth Saturday at the Quail Lodge Resort and Golf Club as Lynne Cowan topped 16-year-old Jennifer Johnson 5 & 4 to win her fourth title, giving her a tie for the most titles ever, with Mina Harigae and Shelly Hamlin.
Cowan was the one to halt Harigae's four-year winning streak in 2005, then etched her name in the record books with her romp in 2007.
The Davis resident rolled through the first two rounds, winning 8 & 7, 6 & 4 then had her toughest match in the quarters before winning 4 & 3.
She won the quarterfinal 6 & 5.
Cowan said she caught a stroke of luck when her friend Sandy Woodruff topped the red-hot medalist, Jane Chin of Huntington Beach, in the first round.
"I was very fortunate Sandy took her out for me," said Cowan. "She really did me a huge favor, because Jane was in my bracket."
