PETERBOROUGH, Ontario (Sept. 8, 2007)-- In a thrilling final round that saw winds gusting up to 30 mph at Kawartha Golf and Country Club, David Lane of Berkshire, England showed why he is among the world’s finest senior amateur players by winning the 46th Canadian Men’s Senior Championship, conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA).

Lane fired a final-round 76 and tournament-total 4-over 217 to finish with a three-stroke victory and become only the third international competitor to claim the John Rankin Memorial Trophy. The 66-year old Lane, a renowned international player with British, Scottish and European Senior titles to his credit outlasted the field under challenging conditions to win his first Canadian title.

“It was tough conditions today but it’s what I like to call good old English weather,” said Lane, who currently sits atop the English Golf Union Seniors Order of Merit. “What a marvelous event we had and I’m just so thrilled to be able to win a Canadian Championship.”

Finishing with a share of runner-up honours at 7-over-par 220 were Canadian amateur legend Graham Cooke of Hudson, Que., former Canadian Mid-Amateur champion Frank Van Dornick of Camrose, Alta. and local favourite and Kawartha member Roger Self of Peterborough.

With his third career runner-up finish at the Canadian Senior, Cooke, a two-time Senior and seven-time Mid-Amateur champion, ties Edward Ervasti of London, Ont. and Dr. George Bigelow of Victoria for the most career second-place finishes at the event.

André Gagné of Boischatel, Que. led for much of the championship but struggled with a final-round 81 to finish tied for fifth with Gary Carter of Amherst, N.S. at 8-over.

In the 36-hole Super Senior division (70 and older) which wrapped up Thursday, Bruce Brewer of Scarborough, Ont. fired a two-day, 11-over 153 to win his first National title. Jack Northey of South Hampton, Ont. finished two strokes back alone in second at 13-over while Michael Harrington of Toronto was third at 16-over. Two-time defending champion Patrick Suraj of Etobicoke, Ont. finished with a share of sixth at 20-over.

The 2008 Canadian Men’s Senior Championship will be conducted September 2-5 at St. Eugene Mission in Cranbrook, B.C.
