London, Ont. (RCGA) (August 24, 2007) – Kris Wasylowich showed why he is among Canada’s premiere amateur players as the Lethbridge, Alta. native came from four shots back to successfully defend his title at the 21st Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship, conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA).

Wasylowich, a member of Canada’s National Amateur Team, began Friday’ final round four shots back of Dave Bunker of Woodbridge, Ont. who held the clubhouse lead through the first 54 holes of the event.

The 27-year old Wasylowich would fire a sizzling 5-under 67 at the Oaks Golf Club to narrow the gap and eventually win his second consecutive Mid-Amateur title.

“I played great on the front today,” said Wasylowich, who was 6-under through nine holes en-route to finishing with a tournament-total score of 9-under 279. “It’s been a long season of golf and definitely feels good to finish up strong and get the win.”

With the victory, Wasylowich joins amateur legends Graham Cooke (7-time winner) and Stu Hamilton (4-time winner) as the only competitors with multiple Mid-Amateur titles. Between them, the trio of Cooke, Hamilton and Wasylowich has claimed 12 titles through the event’s 21-year history.

Wasylowich finishes up a banner year in 2007 that saw him also win the Glencoe Invitational as well as earning low medalist honours at the Canadian Men’s Amateur. Undecided on whether he’ll take a run a professional golf, Wasylowich is already looking ahead to next year’s Canadian Men’s Amateur set to take place August 8-15 at his home course – Paradise Canyon – in Lethbridge, Alta.

Bunker would shoot even-par Friday and eventually finish as the runner-up at 8-under, marking the second consecutive year in which Wasylowich has edged him out for the Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur title.

Richard Ross of Uxbridge, Ont. finished alone in third at 7-under while Matthew Ion-Young of Burlington, Ont. was fourth at 2-under.

While he missed out on the Mid-Am title, Bunker, 42, took consolation in winning his second consecutive Mid-Masters division (40 and over) at 8-under for the tournament.

Local favourite Jay Campbell of London would finish as runner up shooting even-par 288 for the tournament while former Mid-Am champion Garth Collings of Matlock, Man. Was third at 2-over. Seven-time Canadian Mid-Amateur and 2-time Canadian Senior champion Graham Cooke of Hudson, Que. finished with a share of ninth at 6-over.
