JUPITER, Fla. (August 26, 2007) -- Off to a fast start for the second day in a row, Danny Germaine held on Sunday to win the inaugural Mickey Van Gerbig Memorial Palm Beach County Mid-Amateur Stroke Play Championship at the Jupiter Hills Club.
Germaine birdied the first two holes on the Hills course enroute to a three under par 69, wining by two strokes at 141. In Saturday's opening round, he was five under par after five holes but finished with 72, a shot behind the leader, Brent Bush.
Tied for second at 143 were former Palm Beach County Amateur champions R.J. Nakashian and Mike Nealy, who closed with 69 and 70, respectively. Bush added 78 for 149, tied for fifth.
Coincidently, Germaine and Bush are the managers of the Edwin Watts golf stores in Port St. Lucie and Palm Beach Gardens.
"After I let the lead get away from me Saturday, I just rationalized that if I had made an eagle and three birdies throughout the day and shot 72, it would have come out the same," Germaine said, "I tried not to stay upset about the way it happened."
In 36 holes, Germaine, 28, made two eagles, seven birdies and eight bogeys.
It was Germaine's fourth Palm Beach County Golf Association title, his third this year. Following victories in the Stroke Play in June and the Public Links in July, Germaine has taken the lead in the Player of the Year points standings. Three points events remain, including the 22nd annual Mid-Amateur Match Play next month.
"Winning Player of the Year would be huge," Germaine said. "I don't get to play as much as people might think, mostly tournaments on the weekend. And this is the first year I've been able to do much of that."
Germaine took the PBCGA's Nicklaus Junior Championship in 1997 and was the 13-15 age group winner in 1994.
Germaine's wife, Jamie, delivered their first child, a son, Logan, on Aug. 9.
There was a full field of 96 entries 25 years and older.
Van Gerbig, a Palm Beach attorney, won the first Palm Beach County Amateur in 1976, was active in promoting golf on the local and state levels and was inducted into the PBCGA Hall of Fame in 2002.
