Texas Senior Amateur: Arnold comes from behind
TGA photo
DALLAS, Texas (Aug. 19, 2007)-- Mike Arnold from Windcrest (San Antonio) fired a blistering 66 to come from seven shots back and win the 71st Texas Senior Amateur Championship.
Arnold’s impressive 6-under-par round was the lowest of the tournament by three shots and was the lowest of the day by four.
Arnold who is no stranger to big tournaments (two Senior Opens, two US Public Links, and two US Amateurs) picked the right time to card his career-low round as a Senior during the final round of the State Senior Amateur.
His six birdie, no bogie scorecard was a testament to his solid play, but his putter won him the trophy. Although he didn’t know it at the time, Arnold made a 20’ putt on the 18th green to save par that won him the ultimate prize.
“The course didn’t play easy today, but I went out today and just tried to improve my position”. said Arnold.
Indeed he did, and won his first TGA championship for his efforts.
Jimmy Chapman of Irving made a run for the title and came up just few feet short. Needing to make birdie on the difficult par-5 18th hole on the Gold Course, Chapman pushed his approach shot into the right bunker and was forced to try and hole his bunker shot for a share of the lead.
The shot landed a few feet short and left him with a three-footer for the runner up position, which he ultimately made. Chapman carded a 2-under-par 70 for the day and a tournament total of even par 216.
