McCoy wins 2004 Crump Cup at Pine Valley

Pine Valley, NJ- (September 26, 2004) The George A. Crump Cup was played from Sept 23-26 at Pine Valley Golf Club.

Michael McCoy defeated Jamie Slonis, 4 and 3, and captured the 82nd annual championship.

McCoy, of Des Moines, Iowa, eliminated San Francisco's Randy Haag, 1 up, in the morning semifinals. Slonis advanced to the title match of the 16-player championship flight with a 1-up victory against Overbrook's Chris Lange in a 19-hole match.

Jack Vardaman of Washington, D.C., took the Senior Division trophy with a 1-up win over Joseph Keller of Massachusetts, and Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania's David Brookreson prevailed in the Senior Second Flight.

The George Arthur Crump Cup -- named for the hotelier and course architect most famous for building Pine Valley -- is arguably the premier mid- amateur event in the United States. The invitational field is made of of top players from around the United States and the UK. The format for the four days is two rounds of stroke play qualifying, followed by four rounds of match play. Players are flighted according to their qualifying position, and a separate Senior flight includes two of those flights. Jay Sigel has won the event the most times, with nine victories between 1975 and 1993.

Sunday at The Crump Cup is unique; the public is invited to spectate the final matches - a shuttle from a nearby parking area is provided. Info follows: Pine Valley Golf Club will host the 91st George Arthur Crump Memorial Tournament Thursday, September 17th through Sunday the 20th. The public is invited to view the final match on Sunday, September 20th. The gates will open at approximately 1:00 pm.

Parking and transportation arrangements are being handled by the Clementon Youth Athletic Association. Parking will be at the Clementon Elementary School located a 4 Audubon Ave. Clementon, NJ. Signs will be posted to direct you to the designated parking area. Please remember, Clementon Police will not allow any parking along East Atlantic Avenue between Clementon Road and the Club.

There will be a fee of $25.00 per car which will include parking and a shuttle bus that will operate between the school and Pine Valley all afternoon.

The Clementon Youth Athletic Association will also have a refreshment stand set up inside the front gate. All proceeds from the parking and refreshment stands benefit the Clementon Youth Athletic Association.
