ROUND ONE REPORT

Behind a 4-under 68 from Gisli Sveinbergsson No. 23 Kent State is leading the way after the first round of the Maui Jim Intercollegiate.

Sveinbergsson, the individual leader, was one of three Golden Eagles under-par on Friday at Desert Forest Golf Club and at 7-under Kent State is ahead by eight. No. 23 Arizona State and Minnesota are tied for second at 1-over, No. 18 Georgia Tech is fourth at 3-over while in fifth it is Kansas at 3-over. Defending champion and seventh-ranked LSU is tied for sixth with Lipscomb at 6-over.

A native of Iceland, Sveinbergsson, started his round slowly with a double-bogey on the 1st but quickly found his grove with birdies on each of the next two holes to move to even-par. Sveinbergsson, the winner of the 2017 Mid-American Conference Individual title, then carded birdies on No. 6 and 7 to reach 2-under and the red for good.

Despite three bogeys over the course of the last 10 holes the junior was able to move lower with five more birdies, including three on the final five holes. Overall Sveinbergsson birdied nine-times during the round.

Teammates Bjarki Petursson and Chris Doody are tied for third at 2-under while Ian Holt at 1-over is tied for 20th.

The top-five of the individual standings is rounded by Noah Norton (Georgia Tech) in second at 3-under while in a share of third at 2-under it is Petursson, Doody, Riley Johnson (Minnesota) and Blake Wagoner (Arizona State).
