2017 U.S. Amateur Qualifying Roundup
VARIOUS SITES ACROSS THE USA (July 26, 2017) - Qualifying for the 2017 U.S. Amateur has been completed at 100 qualifying sites across the U.S., and in Canada, Puerto Rico and Mexico.

The USGA accepted 7,149 entries for the 117th U.S. Amateur Championship, scheduled for August 14-20, 2017 at The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, CA, and Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles, CA.



Highlights from qualifying include:

July 3

Parathakorn Suyasri of Thailand, who will be playing college at Colorado State this fall, shot a 135 to beat the field by two shots at the Columbine Valley, Co qualifier. Suyasri finished T28 on the Asian Tour's Thailand Open earlier this year. 2014 Pacific Northwest Amateur champion Cole Madey of West Linn, OR also qualified. Madey also recently won the Oregon Amateur.

July 5

Alex Springer of Olathe, KS, winner of the 2016 Magnolia Amateur, advanced from the Wadsworth, IL qualifier.

Ian Holt from Stow, OH and Kent State University, qualified for his third straight U.S. Amateur, earning medalist honors at the Columbus, OH qualifier.

A pair of Canadians took the two spots available at the York, ME qualifier. Hugo Bernard, who won the Canadian Amateur, the NCAA Division II Championship, and the Orlando International Amateur in 2016, shot a 140 to clear the field by three shots. Joey Savoie, who recently finished runner-up at the Monroe Invitational, survived a 3-for-1 playoff for the final spot, sending him to the U.S. Amateur for the third straight year.

Kyle Mueller of Watkinsville, GA and the University of Michigan, winner of this year's Aggie Invitational and last year's Windon Memorial, advanced from the Blythewood, SC qualifier shooting 138.

Philip Barbaree of Shreveport, LA and LSU, who finished runner-up at the South Beach International Amateur last winter, won the Euless, TX qualifier by two shots with a 133. Sean Carlon of Albuquerque, NM and the University of New Mexico, also qualified. Carlon was the runner-up at the Southwestern Amateur in June.

Mid-amateur Mike Calef of W. Bridgewater, MA who has won multiple Massachusetts Amateur titles, was co-medalist at the Cranston, RI qualifier with a 142.

Christopher Petefish of Danville, CA who won this year's Azalea Invitational and was runner-up in the Monroe Invitational, took the only spot at the Salix, PA qualifier, beating the field by three shots with a 135.

Canadian Chris Crisologo, who was runner-up in the Glencoe Invitational and who had a top 20 finish in a PGA Tour Canada event this year, medaled at the Cle Elum, WA qualifier.

Mid-Am Jack Schultz of Whitefish Bay, WI was the medalist at the Cedar Springs, MI qualifier with a 141.

July 7

Doc Redman of Raleigh, NC and Clemson University medaled by five shots at the Sanford, NC qualifier. Redman made the final 32 of last year's U.S. Amateur at Oakland Hills. At the time of the qualifier, Redman was #25 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Amateur Ranking.

World #12 Jack Singh Brar traveled from England to play in the New City, NY qualifier, and he came out the winner by four shots after a 132. Singh Brar has had a terrific season so far, winning the Lytham Trophy, finishing runner-up in the English Amateur (Brabazon Trophy) and the Avondale Amateur Medal in Australia, and finishing in the top 10 in the European Amateur, British Amateur and Australian Amateur. Recent Northeast Amateur runner-up and World #17 Theo Humphrey of Greenwich, CT and Vanderbilt University also qualified, as did Thomas LaMorte, the current New York City champion who won the 2016 New Jersey Amateur.

Oklahoma State University teammates took the two spots available at their collegiate home course in Stillwater, OK. Brendon Jelley of Tulsa, OK and Hayden Wood of Edmond, OK shared medalist honors at 138, three shots ahead of everyone else.

2017 Memorial Amateur champion Alex Lee of Sacramento, CA was the co-medalist at the Rancho Murieta, CA qualifier with a 136.

Mid-amateurs took two of three spots at the Dayton, OH qualifier. David Gies of Charlotte, NC and Tom Miles of Dublin, OH got through a five-man playoff for the final two spots by each making birdie on the first playoff hole.

Mid-Amateur Kenny Coakley of Phoenix, AZ, who made the final 32 in last year's U.S. Mid-Amateur, was medalist at the Morton, MN qualifier with a 138.

Will Gordon of Davidson, NC and Vanderbilt University who won the 2015 Greystone Invitational and made the Western Amateur semifinals last year, advanced from the Monroe, NC qualifier. Medalist Jacob Solomon of Dublin, CA and Auburn University lapped the field by four shots with a 128.

Mid-Am Brett Patterson of McMinnville, TN won the Hamilton, NY qualifier with a 142.

World #53 Dylan Wu of Medford, OR and Northwestern University, earned medalist honors at the Glen Ellyn, IL qualifier with a 139. Wu recently traveled to the U.K. to compete in the British Amateur, European Amateur and British Open Regional and Final Qualifying.

July 11

Three spots were available at the Normal, IL qualifier, but four players shot 139 to share medalist honors. A 4-for-3 playoff was held, from which Kyle Flexsenhar, Jordan Less, and mid-amateur Todd Mitchell all advanced.

Mid-amateur Scott Shingler of Haymarket, VA, a former U.S. Men's State Team runner-up, advanced from the Newport News, VA qualifier.

Hayden Springer of Trophy Club, TX, who was the low American at the British Amateur this year making the final 16, made it through the Lubbock, TX qualifier.

Jordan Costello of Pinedale, WY medaled for the second year in a row, shooting a 137 to win by three at the Casper, Wy qualifier. Costello also medaled at the U.S. Open Local qualifier this spring.

In the Mexico City, Mexico qualifier, Raul Pereda took the only spot available, shooting 136 to clear the field by three shots. Pereda helped his Jacksonville University golf team make the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history this year.

July 13

John Pak of Scotch Plains, NJ who was the runner-up in the Terra Cotta Invitational this spring, endured difficult conditions at the Clifton, NJ qualifier to medal by one shot at 145.

Mid-amateur Steven Irwin, son of three-time U.S. Open champion Hale Irwin, advanced from the Fort Collins, CO qualifier. Irwin also qualified for the U.S. Amateur two years ago, and qualified for the 2011 U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club.

July 17

Daulet Tuleubayev went low at the Turlock, CA qualifier, shooting a 10-under 62 followed by a 67 to finish at 15-under 129, four shots clear of the field.

UC Davis teammates Evan Knight and Ben Corfee both shot a seven under total of 137 to tie for medalist honors at the El Macero, CA qualifier.

At the only qualifier held in Canada, Garrett Rank shot a course record at Granite Golf Club in Stouffville, Ontario to win the qualifier by five shots over John Foster and by six over Jake McNulty. Rank is currently ranked #3 in the AmateurGolf.com Mid-Amateur Rankings and in recent years has had runner-up finishes in the Sunnehanna Amateur, Players Amateur, and U.S. Mid-Amateur.

At the Covington, LA qualifier, Shane Sigsbee of Las Vegas, NV, who was part of the winning team at last month's Anderson Memorial at Winged Foot, was co-medalist with James Anstiss of New Zealand, who was runner-up in the North & South Amateur this summer.

Mid-amateurs swept the three qualifying spots available at the Rochester, MI qualifier. Michiganders Bradley Bastion, Scott Strickland, and Jeff Champine all punched their tickets to Riviera, clearing the rest of the field by four shots.

Two qualifiers were held in the New York City area, and both produced runaway wins for the respective medalists. At the Purchase, NY qualifier, Cameron Young of Scarbrough, NY shot a 10-under 134 to win by seven shots. Young made the final 16 in last year's U.S. Amateur at Oakland Hills. At the Huntington, NY qualifier, Gerald Mackedon went two better, winning by nine shots as the only player under par at 9-under 131.

64-year-old George Zahringer of New York City, the 2002 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion, took the last spot at the Huntington, NY qualifier, shooting even-par 140.

Rylee Reinertson of Gibbon, NE, a member of the NCAA Champion Oklahoma Sooners golf team, shot an 8-under 134 at the Sioux Falls, SD qualifier to take the only spot by one shot.

Corby Segal of Santa Clarita, CA, winner of last year's Southern California Mid-Amateur, advanced through the Glendale, CA qualifier with a 4-under 138.

Guilford College head coach Justin Tereshko, the current North Carolina Amateur champion, shot a second-round 65 to pass 11 players and take medalist honors at the Cincinnati, OH qualifier.

Scores were low at the Highland, UT qualifier. How low? Patrick Fishburn of Ogden, UT didn't make a bogey in 36 holes, shot 9-under 135...and didn't qualify. The two-spots went to co-medalists Rhett Rasmussen of Draper (runner-up at last month's Monroe Invitational) and Mitchell Schow of Ogden who both shot 10-under 134.

World #17 Matthew Perrine of Austin, TX and Baylor University medaled at the Lantana, TX qualifier with consecutive rounds of 6-under 66. Perrine made the quarterfinals of the 2015 U.S. Amateur at Olympia Fields.

P.J. Samiere of Kailua, HI, the current California Amateur champion who also won last year's Southwestern Amateur, took the only spot at the Kapolei, HI qualifier, shooting 137 to win by two shots.

July 18

Will Grimmer of the Ohio State University, a runner-up in the Big 10 Championship and in last year's Rice Planters Amateur shot a 4-under 136 to medal at the Cincinnati, OH qualifier. Patrick Cover, who won the Clemson Invitational this spring as a member of the UNC Wilmington golf team, won a playoff for the final qualifying spot.

In the qualifier held at TPC Dorado Beach in Puerto Rico, Juan Jose Guerra of the Domincan Republic (and Nova Southeastern University) shot a one-under 143 to win by three shots and take the only qualifying spot.

2016 Missouri Amateur champion Sam Migdal advanced from the St. Louis, MO qualifier, shooting a 7-under 137, one shot behind medalist Blaine Buente, with Wesley Hunter winning a 3-for-1 playoff for the final spot.

Matt Oshrine of Baltimore, MD and Duke University, who has made match play in the last two U.S. Amateurs, shot a 4-under 140 to medal at the Mitchellville, MD qualifier. The 2015 Rice Planters Amateur champion William Rainey of Charlotte, NC (and the College of Charleston) also qualified.

Kavan Eubank of Corpus Christi, TX and Texas A&M University took the lone qualifying spot at the Kuna, ID qualifier, where over half the field broke par. Eubank shot 66-65 for a 13-under 131 total.

July 19

Two massive 132-for-4 qualifiers were completed in the Atlanta area.

Reigning Australian Amateur champion Matias Sanchez was co-medalist at Piedmont Driving Club with mid-amateur Chris Waters of Atlanta at 7-under 137. Steven Fisk of Stockbridge, GA continued his good play this summer after third place finishes at the Southeastern Amateur and Dogwood Invitational.

At the Capital City Club, Luke Schniederjans of Alpharetta, GA and Georgia Tech shot an 8-under 132 to earn medalist honors. Winner of the Puerto Rico Classic and last year's Carpet Capital Collegiate, Schniederjans recently finished as the runner-up at the Dogwood Invitational. His Georgia Tech teammate Andy Ogletree of Meridian, MS, winner of last year's Cardinal Amateur, also qualified.

July 21

Jack Weller of Swartz Creek, MI and Ferris State University shot an 8-under 64 in the afternoon round to pass 20 players and take medalist honors at the Lansing, MI qualifier.

World #27 Justin Suh of San Jose, CA shot a seven-under 135 to win the Seaside, CA qualifier by three shots over Australian Kiran Day and the California Amateur runner-up Noah Norton of Chico, CA.

Anthony Manguray of Tracy, CA and Stanislaus State, shot 13-under (67-64) at the Fresno, CA qualifier to medal by two shots over Ashkaan Hakim (63-70) of San Ramon, CA. Australian Blake Collyer took the third and final spot with an 8-under 136.

Franklin Huang of Poway, CA and Stanford University, winner of the 2016 NCAA West Regional, advanced from the San Diego qualifier, shooting a 9-under 135.

Derek Castillo of Yorba Linda, CA won the Mission Viejo, CA qualifier by six shots, shooting an 8-under 134.

World #24 Dylan Perry of Australia, who won the Riversdale Cup and so nearly won the British Amateur earlier this summer, was the co-medalist at the Rocky Mount, NC qualifier shooting 136. South African Kyle McClatchie, the current English Amateur champion, also qualified with a 137.

Brian Humphreys of Washougal, WA who won this year's Mountain West Championship as a member of the Boise State golf team, shot an 11-under 133 to win the Medford, OR qualifier by two shots.

Michael Perras of Pasadena, TX and the University of Houston, winner of the American Athletic Conference Championship as well as last year's Greystone Invitational and NCAA East Regional, was the co-medalist at the Pearland, TX qualifier with a 5-under 139. Pryce Beshoory, the current Glencoe Invitational champion, also advanced.

Mid-amateur Michael Muehr of Potomac Falls, VA, a two-time Crump Cup champion, shot a 9-under 131 to earn medalist honors at the Silver Spring, MD qualifier.

Current New Year's Invitational champion Hayden Buckley of Belden, MS and the University of Missouri advanced from the Pullman, WA qualifier with an 8-under 134.

Matt Tolan of Eau Claire, WI coming off of his Wisconsin State Amateur win last week, medaled at the Watertown, WI qualifier, shooting an 8-under 132.

July 25

Brandon Mancheno of Jacksonville, FL, an Auburn commit who won last year's St. Augustine Amateur, was the co-medalist at the St. Augustine, FL qualifier shooting a 136.

Spencer Soosman of Westlake Village, CA and the University of Texas started his second round with 10 birdies in the first 11 holes on his way to a 64 and an 11-under 133 total to medal at the Andover, MA qualifier. Brandon Wu of Scarsdale, NY and Stanford University, who won the Porter Cup three days ago, advanced from a 3-for-2 playoff.

Tyler Strafaci of Ft. Lauderdale and Georgia Tech, winner of the Valspar Collegiate earlier this year, medaled at the Miami Beach, FL qualifier shooting a 133.
