Georgia Sr. Match Play: Day One of Stroke Play Qualifying is Complete

COLUMBUS, GA (April 11, 2017) - With the first round of Georgia Senior Match Play stroke play qualifying in the books, both Jorge Cora and Wright Waddell posted a 1-under-par 70 to lead the field. The sixth edition of this event is taking place at Green Island Country Club, April 11-14.

Cora's round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-4 5th hole to go along with two birdies on the day, while Waddell had three birdies of his own during the first round. Defending champion Jeff Belk of Marietta finished round one at 5-over-par 76.

In the Super Senior division for those ages 65 and above, the Columbus duo of Bill Evans and Bill Ploeger sit tied atop the leaderboard at 1-under-par 70. Defending Super Senior champion Len McWilliams of Ellerslie finished round one at 6-over-par 77.

Entries were open to male amateur golfers. The Senior division was open to those age 55 and older as of April 11, and the Super Senior division was open to those age 65 and older as of April 11.

The format is match play preceded by 36 holes of stroke play qualifying. The low 16 players will advance to match play in both divisions.

ABOUT THE Georgia Senior Match Play

Open to male amateur golfers age 55 or older for the Senior Division and age 65 or older for the Super Senior Division as of the first day of the competition.

Field: 120 players with the lowest USGA Handicap Indexes

Format: Match play preceded by 36 holes of stroke play qualifying; low 16 players advance to match play in both divisions if there are at least 32 entries in that division; otherwise, eight players.
