CITY OF INDUSTRY (January 31, 2017) -- On the strength of Joe Fryer's medalist victory Long Beach State began their spring season with a win at the Folino Men's Invitational. The 49ers led when second round play was suspended due to darkness late Monday and then completed the run to the title at Industry Hills Golf Club on Tuesday.

Fryer, a redshirt sophomore, finished the last three holes of his second round early Tuesday to post a 36-hole tally of 6-under following consecutive 3-under 69's. Playing with the lead in the final round Fryer didn't do anything spectacular but his 1-under 71 was good enough to move him to 7-under and five-strokes ahead of runner-up Zach Smith of UC Santa Barbara.

During the final round Fryer, who started on the 15th hole, birdied three-times and eagled once while also bogeying four-times. The birdies came in succession on Nos. 1-3 and the eagle was recorded on the par-5 8th.

Long Beach was helped to the title by two other top-20 finishers, senior Agostino Milazzo (T10; +5) and freshman Hunter Reed (T17; +7).

Behind Long Beach State in the team standings is runner-up UC Santa Barbara at 10-over, at 23-over it was third place UC Irvine, placing fourth was CSU - Northridge at 28-over while Boise State finished fifth at 29-over.

Medalist runner-up Zach Smith was the only other player to complete play in red figures at 2-under, Boise State's Brian Humphreys was third at 1-over and David Kim of UC Irvine; Sam Gillis of UC Davis shared fourth at 2-over.
