Ping's latest i200 irons offer a perfect combination of forgiveness, distance, and good looks. They take over where their predecessor (the irons simply called "i") left off, with only a minimal amount of offset, and a fairly traditional look at address. The heads are small to medium (especially relative to game-forgiving irons) and the top line is thin. If you're a fan of the classic perimeter weighted iron, you're going to want to take a look at the i200.

They aren't Ping's most traditional iron (that honor goes to the aptly named iBlade) but the i200 will still appeal to better players. But the target market is those needing more distance -- Ping refers to it as "precision distance" -- without losing control.

So you've got a set that goes from a more forgiving, high launch long iron down to a more compact, penetrating ball flight short iron. Sounds good, right?

The irons are made of a soft 431 stainless, and like earlier i series models feature an elastomer insert -- but this one is backed by a longer, deeper tuning port and muscle stabilizing bar. It's a nice, clean look that's further enhanced by a beautiful hydropearl chrome finish that's said to repel moisture and provide a smoother surface interaction. I've found Ping irons to be really easy to maintain over time, and if this new finish helps in that regard I'm all for it, especially if it improves playability.

Another important upgrade -- the face is thinner, which means two things. More distance, and more forgiveness. Because the extra weight is utilized on the perimeter, which results in a higher MOI.

Stock shaft options include a nicely-married set of AWT steel shafts that fall into the 105 gram weight in stiff flex. If you're looking for the feel and lightness of graphite, the CFS is a nice option. You can also order other shafts including True Temper Dynamic Gold, N.S. Pro Modus3 or True Temper XP95. If you're going to invest in a new set of irons like the i200, make sure you get the right shaft -- it's crucial to your long term happiness.

With your clubs at least.

RELEASE NOTES:

The i200 irons will be available February 2, 2017 at a price of $135 per iron in steel, or $150 each in graphite.
