The PGA Tour's OHL Classic
It's no secret that PGA Tour players get treated
pretty well, especially when it comes to playing
events at golf resorts like Mayakoba, in Mexico.
AmateurGolf.com members are being offered some
similar hospitality this Spring, starting with an
amazing package deal that
includes unlimited golf during your stay.
I've had the chance to visit the area several
times, and enjoy things like watching fresh fish go
from ocean, to fire, to my palm-tree shaded table on
the beach. I even dove out of my comfort zone and
into a "Cenote" to do some subterranean
snorkeling. Riviera Maya is an amazing part of
Mexico, whether you play golf or not.
I checked in with former amateur golf standout
Matt Bettencourt of the PGA Tour to find out from
him what the golf experience was like at Mayakoba,
which he has visited four times to play in the OHL
Classic. (He made the cut there every time, with two
top-20 finishes.)
I asked Matt about his stays at the Fairmont,
and his experience at the El Cameleon course. I
could hear him smiling on the other end of the phone
line.
"The Fairmont is 5-plus star as far as I'm
concerned," said the past champion of the Reno
Tahoe Open. "There are about 8 different
cuisines, all sorts of amenities, and miles of bike
trails through the jungle and around the resort - we
even rode to the course one day."
Matt loved the fact that it's the kind of resort
where you check in, and never have to leave for the
week. And as for the Greg Norman course, he used
words like "pristine" to describe the way
it's conditioned when the Tour comes to town.
"The layout is my favorite Greg Norman
design," he said. "Every year we [Tour
players] get asked to rate the condition of the
courses we play and it comes in No. 1 or 2. The
Seashore Paspalum grass is like a carpet - you get a
good lie all the time."
Matt stayed in the main hotel building of the
Fairmont, which offers the convenience of being
close to the clubhouse. Past winners of the OHL get
2
story beach front casitas, complete with their own
butler. If that isn't incentive to defend your title, I
don't know what is.
We're gearing up for a future AmateurGolf.com
event at Mayakoba, and to get feedback from our
insiders are offering an amazing golf-inclusive
package. For more information, visit our partners at
