Jones/Doherty Womens Amateur: Lendl beats Duncan in Final
Ft Lauderdale, Florida
Ft Lauderdale, Florida

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (January 20, 2007) -- Marika Lendl knocked in a 10-foot birdie on the 16th hole to capture the Ione D. Jones/Doherty Cup Women's Amateur Championship at Fort Lauderdale's Coral Ridge Country Club. Lendl's birdie putt on the par-3 No. 16, gave her a three hole lead over Plantation's Lindy Duncan in the match play tournament with two holes remaining Saturday afternoon. 'Everything went well for me,' said the 16-year-old daughter of eight-time Grand Slam tennis winner Ivan Lendl. ``I putted well, I chipped well, I had only one bogey, and that was early in the match.'' The pair traded the lead early, but were even after the front nine and played that way through the next two holes when Lendl began to build a lead starting on No 12 with Duncan three-putting the par-3. In the Senior Championship, Connie Shorb waited until the 17th hole for her only birdie of the match, and then sank an 11-foot pressure-filled putt for par to tie Therese Quinn for the hole. The 1-up-after-18-holes victory was a pleasant surprise to Shorb, who calls Fort Lauderdale home three months a year. ''I played well yesterday, but I was uncomfortable today,'' Shorb said. ``I made a lucky putt on 17 and I was fortunate to be able to go to school on Therese's putt on 18.'' For Quinn, it was her first time back in the tournament since 1966, when she competed at the age of 16. Susan Choi took the Amateur First Flight defeating Julie Carmichael 3 and 2. Debra Mielke was victorious in the day's longest match. She beat Gale Brudner by one hole after playing 20. (Courtesy Miami Herald) 75th Ione D.
