Professionals regain Tennessee Challenge Cup over Amateurs

FAIRFIELD GLADE, TN (October 16, 2016) -- The Professional team representing the Tennessee Section PGA captured the 49th Annual Tennessee Challenge Cup Matches with a final score of 19 to 13 Sunday at Stonehenge Golf Club.

The event, which is jointly conducted by the Tennessee Golf Association and Tennessee Section PGA, annually pits the top 16 Amateurs and top 16 PGA Professionals in the state of Tennessee in a Ryder Cup style format.

The morning session on Saturday featured eight Four-Ball matches which the Professionals took full advantage of. After the morning Four-Ball matches, the Professionals led 6-2. The afternoon Foursomes(alternate shot) matches were split 4-4 to setup at 10-6 lead for the Professionals heading into Sunday’s Singles matches.

On Sunday the Professionals struck early winning the first four matches of the morning and would claim 9 of the possible 16 Singles points. With the 19-13 victory, the Professionals now lead the overall series 29 to 20.

The Professional Team was led by Captain Ken Crowder, PGA of Big Stone Gap, Virginia. Crowder was enthusiastic throughout the weekend and guided his team brilliantly. Crowder, who recently concluded a two- year term as President of the Tennessee Section PGA, has been named Tennessee PGA Golf Professional of the Year in 2007, 2011 and 2015.

The Professional Team was selected from the Tennessee Section PGA’s Professional and Senior Professional Player of Year Lists and two captain’s picks. The Amateur Team was selected from the Tennessee Golf Association’s Amateur and Senior Amateur Player of the Year Lists. Each team of 16 includes six seniors age 50 and older.

Ryder-cup style team matches between the Tennessee Golf Association and the Tennessee PGA Section. The Amateur Team is selected from the Tennessee Golf Association’s Amateur and Senior Amateur Player of the Year Lists. The Professional Team is selected from the Tennessee Section PGA’s Professional and Senior Professional Player of Year lists. Each team of 16 includes six seniors age 50 and older.
