SCGA Tournament of Club Champions: Results from 3 Sites

CHULA VISTA, Calif. and OCEANSIDE, Calif. (December 4, 2006) -- On a day that included strong breezes, a visible Tijuana fire and a field of scratch golfers in which less than half could break 80, Quail Ranch GC's Johnny Holmes was the lone player to break par and took the Championship Flight of the SCGA Tournament of Club Champions at Salt Creek Golf Club in Chula Vista. At two other sites, Paul Gee of the Accounting and Finance GC won the President Flight at Arrowood GC in Oceanside, while Ken Haugan of T It Up was victorious in the Vice President Flight at Twin Oaks in San Marcos.

Johnny Holmes of Quail Ranch GC (right, pictured with father and SCGA President Ed Holmes), won the Champion Flight of the SCGA Tournament of Club Champions at Salt Creek GC.
For Holmes, the day was special for more than just his 1-under-par 71 win; the son of SCGA President Ed Holmes, Johnny was awarded the trophy by his father.

"I was so nervous the entire afternoon," elder Ed said. "Every time I saw another score in the 70s come in I would cringe, hoping that Johnny would still be in the lead. I am so proud right now."

Holmes, 31, is a two-time winner of his club's championship and has been participating in SCGA events for five years. He also earns exemption into the 108th SCGA Amateur Championship in June at Victoria Club, his father's home club.

"For as difficult as the course was out there, it was certainly fair," Holmes said. "It was one of those days that was just a good round."

One stroke behind Holmes was Sycamore Canyon's Brady Baguio, while four-time SCGA Amateur champion Craig Steinberg of North Ranch CC secured third with a 2-over-par 73. After a five-way tie for fourth at 74 and a back-nine card-off to determine the fourth- and fifth-place winners, Dave Cox of Meadow Lake GC secured the fourth-place title while Zeric Hulvey of Glen Annie GC took fifth.

At the net President Flight, Gee, a 6.2-index, fired a 6-under-par 65, while three strokes behind was Manuel Adame (5.8-index) of the SCMAGA Carlsbad Chapter. After a card-off, Simi Hills GC's Randy Greene (2.5-index) took third and Renegade GC's Bryan Davis (8.6-index) took fourth when they tied with 69s, while Ed Gross (5.6-index) of Southland Golfers GC secured fifth place at 70.

In the net Vice President Flight race, Ken Haugan of T It Up, a 14.0-index, took the title with a 9-under-par 63, while two strokes back was Northrop Grumman Azusa's Shelly Armstrong (22.7-index) with a 65. In a card-off for third with scores of 66, Mark Can Dorselaer (11.6-index) of 19th Holers GA secured the title while Ismael Villegas (21.9-index) of the SCMAGA Chapter in Carlsbad came in fourth. In another card-off for fifth, NBC Golf League's Mel Sanders (16.8-index) shot a 68.
