DETRIOT LAKES, MN (August 14, 2016) -- Playing on the Pine to Palm Course at Detroit Country Club Beau Hanson took home the Pine to Palms title after surviving a field of 64. For Hanson the 2&1 victory marked his second win at the Pine to Palms, following his 2012 victory.

The seven-seed Hanson, a recent Little Rock graduate, outlasted Minnesota senior, No. 48 William Leaf in the final.

Leaf, making his first appearance at the Pine to Palm, took an early 2 up lead as he won the first two holes with a birdie on No.1 and a bogey on the 2nd.

However, Hanson a veteran of the event battled back and moved the match to all-square with nine holes remaining.

Leaf took the lead again with a birdie on the 10th hole, only to have Hanson tie it on the 12th with an eagle. A couple of holes later Hanson took his first lead of the match on No. 13.

Fast forward to the 15th hole and what proved to be the deciding hole. Both players found trouble off the tee but when Hanson was able to scramble for a par his lead was pushed to 2 up. After a pair of halves Hanson closed out the match on the 17th.

The day began with morning semifinal matches and it was Hanson reaching the championship tilt thanks to a 5&4 triumph against three-seed and Wisconsin senior Benjamin Skogen.

Leaf made his way to the finals via an extra hole win over No. 5 Will Czeh, a sophomore at Bemidji State.

Other notable Pine to Palm champions included Scott Uithoven in the Mid-Amateur Division, A.J. Greff in the Senior Division while in the Super Senior Division Chuck Renner won his sixth straight title.

“I’m surprised as anybody,” Renner told the Detroit Lakes Tribune. “When I first came here, all I wanted to do was get my name on that board one time. When I’m home in the winter in Phoenix, I have a trophy and weight room where I exercise. To be able to look up there and see that, that’s special. It’s something to be proud of and hopefully, this will inspire other people to do the same.”
