NORTH BARRINGTON, IL (August 11, 2016) -- Vance Antoniou, a Wynstone Golf Club member who lives a stone's throw from the club, took home the title at the 15th CDGA Senior Amateur Championship with a 3&2 victory over Tim Sheppard (Lick Creek GC) Thursday morning.

For Antoniou, who noted he's played in CDGA events since he was a teenager, it is his first triumph in a CDGA or State event, something made all the sweeter by taking place at his home course.

“I've had a lot of great finishes, tons of top-10, top-5 finishes, but this is my first win,” Antoniou said. “It means a lot to me doing it on my home course. You have the advantage of knowing the shots a little better and the disadvantage of having a little extra pressure on you.”

SEMIFINAL RECAP

Second-seed Tim Sheppard (Lick Creek GC) cruised into the championship match with a birdie on 15th hole—the first time he's seen the hole in match play—to win 4 and 3 over Mike Karney (Crystal Lake CC). Sheppard, who just joined the senior ranks, is in his first CDGA Senior Amateur Championship after having won the inaugural CDGA Senior Amateur Four Ball with Tom Kearfott in May.

Vance Antoniou (Wynstone GC) claimed victory in the first semifinal on Wednesday, a 5-and-4 win over Tom Fox (Midlothian CC). Antoniou, who also holds a membership at Wynstone Golf Club, is vying to win on home turf in his fifth CDGA Senior appearance.

QUARTERFINAL RECAP

Tom Fox, Vance Antoniou, Tim Sheppard and Mike Karney all notched quarterfinal victories and will play for a spot in the CDGA Senior Amateur championship match this afternoon.

Fox cruised by Mike Heffner, 6 and 5, while Antoniou was taken to 17 by Dan Caporusso before closing out the match, 2 and 1. Sheppard birdied his final three holes to knock off Mark Esposito, 6 and 4, while Mike Karney built a 4-up lead through six en route to a 4-and-3 win over Steve Thompson.
