Derek Bard holds 36-hole New York State Amateur advantage

NISKAYUNA, NY (August 10, 2016) -- Derek Bard remains at the top of the New York State Amateur leaderboard, this time he leads alone. After an even-par 71 second round Bard sits at 2-under and leads first round co-leader Tyler McArdell and Luke Feehan by one-stroke at Mohawk Golf Club.

Bard, a senior at Virginia, started on the 10th hole and fell back to even-par for the tournament with bogeys on Nos. 16 and 17. On the ensuing hole Bard got back into red figures with a birdie only to drop another stroke on the first hole. Bard, however would not be deterred and he would return to 2-under with birdies on the 3rd and 8th holes.

Former Boston College Eagle Luke Feehan moved into a tie with second place thanks to a 2-under 69 that brought him to 1-under. Feehan birdied four holes and bogeyed two during his round.

McArdell dropped a stroke but is still right in the mix following a 1-over 72 that saw him bogey four and birdie three.

Christopher Stricek is even-par and in fourth while Arthur Griffin and Jack Gianniny are 1-over and tied for fifth.

Griffin shot the round of the day with a 5-under 66. Griffin began on the 10th hole and got going with birdies on four of five holes from Nos. 14-18. After a bogey on the first Griffin birdied holes 2-4 and the 7th.

ROUND ONE RECAP

Derek Bard and Tyler McArdell, are the only two players under-par after the first round of play at the New York State Amateur and they share the lead. Both Bard and McArdell opened with 2-under 69's.

Bard, a senior at Virginia, who first played in the New York State Amateur as a 13-year-old in 2008 started his round with six straight pars before he birdied holes 7-9 in succession to reach 3-under. On the back nine, the 2016 Masters and U.S. Open participant, bogeyed two holes and then finished with a momentum gaining 18th hole birdie.

Tyler McArdell carded his 69, with three birdies and only one bogey. McArdell got his first birdie on the 9th before carding two more on Nos. 13 and 17.

Alec Bard and Jack Gianniny finished the first round tied for third after even-par 71 rounds. Future Penn State golfer Alex Bard, birdied three holes and bogeyed three during the opening 18-holes.

Gianniny, a Delaware junior, was 3-over after his 11-holes before digging deep down the stretch with birdies on Nos. 12, 13 and 17.

Jon Petrin and Jim Gifford share fifth at 1-over.

ABOUT THE New York State Amateur

This championship is a three-day 72-hole stroke play competition. The field will be cut after 36 holes to the low 40 players and ties. Entries will be limited to male amateur golfers who enjoy membership privileges at Clubs belonging to the New York State Golf Association, or are NYSGA Associate Members.
