(July 24, 2016) -- The question is now 25 years running. Who is the last amateur to win a PGA Tour event? The answer is then Arizona State standout Phil Mickeslon who captured the Nothern Telecom Open in January of 1991.

Today that could all change as Arizona State senior, Jared du Toit in his PGA Tour debut, seeks to become the first amateur to win a Tour event since the early 1990's. There has been some close calls over the years but so far nobody has been able to break through. The most recent near victory came from then Georgia golfer Lee McCoy who finished tied for fourth in March at the Valspar Championship.

It wasn't on the big tour but even more recently California golfer Collin Morikawa nearly won the Web.com Tour’s Air Capital Classic in his first professional start. Morikawa fired consecutive 7-under 63's on the weekend to get into a playoff before falling to Ollie Schniederjans on the second extra hole.

Prior to Mickelson, six amateurs had won events on the PGA Tour. The first was Frank Stranahan in 1945 at the Durham War Bond Tournament, in what became the year of the amateur. Fred Hass (Memphis Invitational) and Cary Middlecoff (North and South Open) also won titles as amateurs that year. Additional amateur winners include:

-Frank Stranahan (1948 Miami Open)
-Gene Littler (1954 San Diego Open)
-Doug Sanders (1956 Canadian Open)
-Scott Verplank (1985 Western Open)

On Sunday Jared du Toit will also have a chance to become the new answer of another trivia question. Who was the last Canadian to win the RBC Canadian Open? The answer is Pat Fletcher in 1954. That was 61 years ago.

Du Toit is also seeking to become the first Canuck born winner of the event since 1908 and 1914 winner Carl Keffer.
