MENASHA, WI (July 20, 2016) -- Incoming Minnesota freshman Thomas Longbella shot his second consecutive 3-under 67 to reach 4-under and take a one-stroke lead at the Wisconsin State Amateur at North Shore Golf Club. He will carry a one-stroke lead over second round leader Nick Nelson into the final round.

Although the scores during each of the last two days were the same, Longbella had to work hard for his Wednesday 67. Following his bogey-free round on Tuesday, Longbella got off to a rocky start with a double-bogey on the first hole of his third round.

However, despite the quick big number Longbella would not be deterred as he rebounded with a 2nd hole birdie, the first of his five during the day while only bogeying one other hole.

Recent Marquette graduate Nick Nelson put together a 1-under third round to remain right at the top of the leaderboard with one round left to play. Nelson birdied three holes and bogeyed two on Wednesday.

Two other players are in red figures; Sam Madsen and Sam Galloway at 1-under as they share third place.

ROUND TWO RECAP

Former Marquette golfer Nick Nelson has grabbed the midway point lead at the Wisconsin State Amateur. Nelson presently sits at 2-under and holds a one-stroke lead over Emmet Herb and Thomas Longbella.

Nelson, an elite player while at Marquette, started the day at 2-under and ended the day with the same score following an even-par 72. The two-time All-Big East selection struggled out of the gates with a bogey on the 3rd hole and a double-bogey on the 4th hole. Needing to rebound Nelson did so in a big way with birdies on holes 6, 9, 10, 13 and 14 to reach 4-under.

With only four holes left Nelson did give some of his hard work back via a double-bogey on the 17th but it didn't prevent him from taking hold of the 36-hole lead.

Emmet Herb and Thomas Longbella, the only two other players in red figures, are tied for second at 1-under. Scott Howard is even-par and in fourth place while four others share fifth at 2-over.

Included in the 2-over group is first round round leader and defending champion Eddie Wajda. The Wisconsin product shot a 5-under 65 in the first round, only to shoot a 7-over 77 in the second round.

ROUND ONE RECAP

Defending Wisconsin Amateur champion Eddie Wajda is right back at the top of the leaderboard following an opening round 5-under 65. Wajda will carry a three-stroke lead into Tuesday's second round of play.

Wajda, a junior at Wisconsin, carded six birdies and one bogey during his first round. The former No. 1 high school player in Wisconsin birdied three holes on each side during his Monday round, all three of his back nine birdies came during the final four holes.

Last year Wajda had his best season to date with the Badgers, recording four top-25 finishes. His best finish came at the The Grove Intercollegiate where he finished in fifth place.

A handful of players are hot on his heels with the second round of play set for tomorrow. Three players; Tumi Kúld, Gene Kiela III and Nick Nelson signed for 2-under 68's while four additional players are 1-under and in tie for ninth.
