MANAKIN-SABOT, VA –– The 24-golfer Carolinas team outscored their Virginias counterparts 13½-10½ in final day singles matches to win the 61st Virginias-Carolinas Team Matches, 27½-20½. The matches concluded today at Kinloch Golf Club (7,112 yards, par 36-36—72). A victory in each match scores one point in the Ryder Cup-style format, and if a match goes 18 holes without a decision, one-half point is awarded to each side.

Carolinas, which owned a 14-10 lead heading into last day singles, bested Virginias regulars, 9-7, and won seniors matches, 4½-3½. A victory in each match scores one point in the Ryder Cup-style format, and if a match goes 18 holes without a decision, one-half point is awarded to each side.

Virginias regulars got off to a strong start, winning three of the first four matches. Tim Fisher (Statts Mills, W.Va.), Keith Decker (Martinsville, Va.) and Roger Newsom (Virginia Beach, Va.) each scored victories for Virginias in that opening stretch. Decker was 2-up through seven holes, but his opponent, Steve Harwell (Mooresville, N.C.), won Nos. 8 and 9 to square the match at the turn.

Decker then won Nos. 10 and 11 to go 2 up and held the lead the rest of the way. Newsom, meanwhile, scored a wire-to-wire 5 and 3 win over Walter Todd (Laurens, S.C.). Luke Hart (Blythewood, S.C.) registered Carolinas lone victory in that span, getting past Tad Tomblin (Charleston, W.Va.), 1 up.

After Robert Dargan (Columbia, S.C.) posted a 7 and 6 victory for Carolinas in match five, Jason Pool (Dunn Loring, Va.) halved Skip Taylor (Flat Rock, N.C.), while Hank Klein (Glen Allen, Va.) scored a 4 and 3 victory. Virginias outscored their counterparts 4½-2½ through the first seven regulars’ matches.

Thereafter, Carolinas won six of eight matches to reclaim the matches. Dale Fuller (Raleigh, N.C.) registered a 6 and 5 victory for Carolinas, before Christopher Reeves (Alexandria, Va.) contributed a win for Virginias, besting Danny Gurley (Chapel Hill, N.C.), 3 and 2. But following Reeves’ win, Carolinas notched three consecutive victories in matches, with Whit Massey (Mount Pleasant, S.C.), John Finster (Wake Forest, N.C.) and Paul Simson (Raleigh, N.C.) earning wins.

Over the final four matches, Yorktown’s Allen Barber contributed a win for Virginias, but Brian Westveer (Charlotte, N.C.) and Mike Goodes (Reidsville, N.C.) posted victories for Carolinas in the closing stretch. In the last regulars’ match of the day, Manakin-Sabot’s David Partridge halved Scott McClellan (Cary N.C.).

Virginias also started well in the seniors matches, winning three of the initial four matches. Jack Forbes (Morgantown, W.Va.), Vinny Giles (Richmond, Va.) and reigning VSGA Senior Amateur champion Jamie Gough (Fairfax, Va.) each posted wins.

Giles was four under through four holes against Ken Eichele (Pinehurst, N.C.) and built an early 3-up lead en route to a 5 and 4 victory. Gough posted a 4 and 3 comeback victory over Bob Desjardins (Matthews, N.C.), winning four straight holes on their outward half to build a 2-up lead.

For Carolinas, Arnold Edwards (Charlotte, N.C.) notched a 2 up victory over J.P. Leigh (Suffolk, Va.). After Rick Bendall (Lynchburg, Va.) halved David Strawn (Charlotte, N.C.), Carolinas captured the last three seniors matches of the day. Logan Jackson (Winston-Salem, N.C.) bested George B. Owens (Virginia Beach, Va.), 3 and 2 in match six. In addition, John Green (Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.) prevailed for a 1-up victory over John Price (Chantilly, Va.), while Roger Taylor (Conover, N.C.) registered a 3 and 2 victory over Charles E. Green III (Tazewell, Va.).

Carolinas retained the Captain’s Putter Trophy, awarded to the event victors, after winning last year’s matches by the same 27½-20½ count at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
